Where to buy First Communion dress?

In real life, where DD can actually try it on, rather than on-line.

We're in the midlands, and I'm happy to travel to Birmingham/London and Leeds/Manchester at a push.

Am looking for something low-key, cotton or silk rather than satin.

I think John Lewis stock this type of thing. Or Debenhams?

Monsoon.

AngiBolen · 30/01/2013 20:48

I know I'm going to sound really fussy, but none of the Monsoon ones are quite right. DD needs short sleeves, as she's so skinny, and floaty sleevless dresses make her look waif like.

Will go and have a look at JL and Debenhams.

Not sure about any of the Debenhams ones on line.

Surely there must be some specific FC shops in RL? Confused

I was in John Lewis and they have some fab dresses that pass for Communion Dresses, very reasonable too one was just £55

OddBoots · 30/01/2013 21:14

Maybe give a few bridal shops a call, I think a lot of young bridesmaid dresses are intended to be suitable for first communions too.

Gingerdodger · 30/01/2013 21:19

I got my daughter's from a bridal shop this time last year. It was quite plain although they did have their fair share of very fancy affairs. It was last year's stock and a bargain at £30 so worth checking out your local bridal shops.

John Lewis
Bhs
Debenhams
Marks & Spencer
Monsoon
Lots on eBay too.

Quite hard to find in the shops, though, but you could order a few to try on?
Also quite hard to find white dresse, as opposed to ivory/cream.

eBay is good for plain white satin shoes/pumps.

Got DD's in John Lewis last year, sleeveless but she wore a short-sleeved bridesmaid cardigan over the top. Most of her friends had a cardi or bolero, at least for the mass.

I have my eye on one in the US, but wanted to try on some in RL to see what style suited best, and also for the sheet pleasure of trying on pretty dresses.

DD also has the worlds narrowest feet, and if shoes are not strapped on they fly off. There will be no ballet pumps, sadly. (Which rules ebay out as I can't guess the size. I'm praying her feet don't grow and I can strap her into some white startrite mary janes -or it will have to be white converse--. (She's so going to hate me when all the other girls are wearing pretty slippers!)

I have seen a really nice dress on ebay, with only one bidder. I thought if I could get it for a low price we could just try it on, and if I didn't like it re-sell, but then I would feel bad snatching it of a person who genuinely wanted it for their DD and was struggling for money.

Next had a few white shoes last year. I found that the sizing was quite random. We ordered 3 styles all in the same size. One wouldn't go on her feet, one completely flopped off and the other fitted perfectly. It was easy though just to take those back that didn't fit.

Also quite a lot of the school uniform shops around here do Communion clothes so they might be worth a look too.

Hope you find what you are looking for and you all have a great day. It's a lovely occasion.

ChippyMinton · 31/01/2013 22:32

DD had these shoes or very similar
