where to go shopping-wise in New York

am off to new york at the weekend for a week woohoo

have never been and am ridiculously excited, am intending to do a lot bit of shopping while i am there

but no idea where to go

am not loaded BTW but love designer bargains, doesnt everyone? so any suggestions would be amazing. we are staying right near 5th ave so very central if that helps....

Oh, yes and Filene's basement was brilliant for shoes.

There is a new century 21 on the upper west side which is less of a jumble sale than the one near GZ. Filene's Basement was great for things like jeans and cashmere too - I was so disappointed that it had closed down when DS and I were back in NY in October (we also got stuck during hurricane sandy but that's a whole different story!). Duane Reade drugstores are great for cheaper bits, cosmetics etc. There are lots of lovely shops around and its great just wandering around the streets and stumbling upon them, especially as you move further down. China town is where you'd go for lots of fake tat but there are some interesting places to eat! If you get the chance you should try and get over to Brooklyn too. Have a wonderful time. NY is one of my favourite places!
