Is nail varnish doing this to my nails ?

I have recently started painting my nails, I am a good girl and use base coat, and a top coat but my nails are splitting and cracking all the time.
Someone told me its because of using nail varnish.
I have never had problems with my nails, generally they are pretty good, but not lately.
Could be the cold weather I guess ?
Anyone got any advice for me ?

Yup, nail varnish will do that. Lots of hand cream, not too much removing (I find keeping mine on as long as possible by redoing top coat etc is better than regular use of nail varnish remover, even the 'kind' stuff) and using nail envy as a base coat will help.

Give your nails a rest for a few days between varnishes, and massage in a drop of almond oil at night to nourish them. I was told this by a manicurist when I was having a similar problem and it seems to have done the trick.

Mine too, OP. I've just ordered some Mavala Scientifique in the hope that it will make them stronger.

I too use base coat, two coats of polish then top coat, but it chips within a couple of days (washing up, I think) and I end up removing it as repairing it never seems to work very well Sad

Use a gel polish so you go 2 weeks between using removers and get some growth going.

Another recommendation for almond oil, or cuticle oil if you have it.
