Dry Shampoo - does it work and how?

I have greasy hair and currently wash it every day. I'd like to go longer between washes and I've heard about these shampoos.
How do they work and which would you recommend? Thanks

I use Batiste occasionally, seems pretty good. You have to make sure you spray it from the right distance and brush it through - check in good light that you haven't given yourself a grey skunk streak! It's basically powdery stuff which absorbs the oil I think, in fact I have heard of people using talc - I imagine this would work better if you're blonde though. I may have imagined it, but I think they do 'coloured' versions now. Unless that was hairspray?

I think batiste is excellent; it's cheap and works really well to give you an extra day without washing your hair. I sound vair attractive not wanting to wash my hair every other day but it is long and I either have to straighten or curl it and sometimes bed is more appealing!!

I used to buy expensive Ojon dry shampoo from qvc but it is nowhere near as good as Batiste!

BillStickersIsInnocent · 21/01/2013 16:06

I use Batiste when I want a top knot as my hair is much easier to handle then. Also to stretch out time between washes. My hair is thick and shoulder length and takes for ever to dry so washing every day, or every other day is not always an option for me at the moment.

I have the brown one and the regular. As said above just take time to brush it out and if using a coloured one don't wear a pale top and check your ears before leaving the house.

Ingredient is corn starch I think.

Another vote for Batiste. Once you start not washing your hair every day, you can train it not to need it, and Batiste helps enormously with that process. Mine doesn't even start to feel unpleasant until about day 4 now, after years of working in places where hair washing is a physical impossibility.

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 21/01/2013 16:12

batiste all the way.

Its good for adding volume and texture too.

I tried the superdrug version once. absolute pap.

I sometimes use dry shampoo and find the Tresemme miles better than Batiste. Much nicer smell and not so powdery. I sometimes use talc (blonde hair) too. Use unperfumed though otherwise smelling like Johnsons baby powder is a dead giveaway!

Wrigglebum · 21/01/2013 19:30

A good tip I had was to use it the night before, means you're less likely to have the grey streak from it.

GinandJag · 21/01/2013 19:31

They work based on electrostatics.

Batiste sounds good, can you buy it at Boots?

CandyLoo - yes Boots will definitely have it.

Could not live without dry shampoo. Another greasy thick haired girl. Really can't take an hour out of my day to dry & style my hair every day! Can go 2/3 days with the aid of Baliste!! (Agree superdrug dry shampoo totally rubbish)

CointreauVersial · 22/01/2013 18:29

Another Batiste fan, marvellous stuff. I remember using it in the late 1970s (and I don't think the packaging has changed since then).

It means I can squeeze an extra day before washing; in fact it gives my hair extra oomph into the bargain. I use the brunette version to avoid the grey look (don't need any help in that direction, thanks). I think it works because the talc soaks up the grease.

MrsEdinburgh · 22/01/2013 20:25

Personally find Batiste pants as it makes my hair look worse.
I use Charles Worthington Front Row which really suits my hair & can give me an extra day or 3.
As CointreauVersial & Incognito rightly point out gives your hair that added oomph!

goingwildforcrayons · 22/01/2013 22:55

Love dry shampoo. I have a right greasemop if I don't wash it daily. Batiste made my head itchy and grey (as if I don't have enough already!), but I really like the Tresemme one. Not the foam though, that was just a disaster!
