Worst dressed: Call centre workers. There are some in my building and you can tell that theyir job is all about their voice, and not what they look like.

Kids tv presenters. Not their fault but too many clashing bright colours!

Best dressed? I imagine it to be fashion magazine workers, all trying to compete with eachother and all being tall and skinny to pull off all the trends.

Bear in mind some of us don't wear our real clothes to work - my off duty look as a teacher is distinctly different. I get covered in goo and have to be able to sit on a very low step with dignity at work. I'm sure very many of us have two very distinct wardrobes.

Never do polyester though and I don't own a cheap handbag. I do have some standards.

Absolutely definitely teachers. The only people I know who think per una is cutting edge. I've seen the lot. I even knew a woman a classroom assistant who wore football shirts to work. I ask you.

I have to say, as an IT person working in a bank (where the dress sense is generally bad, I grant you), by far the worst dressed people I have seen in recent years are the young, super-trendy, fashion-y types that work at modelling and casting studios which I occasionaly have to frequent. They come to work wearing shorts and tights, with cowboy boots and green polyester cardis stolen from their grandad, with pearls and black plastic rimmed glasses (girls) or capri pants so tight they can't sit down, shoes with no socks, a t shirt and a massive beige maternity cardigan (always with the cardis). And have you been out in Shoreditch recently?

Of course, by this logic, the uber-trendies and the IT geeks are now coming dangerously close to coming full circle and meeting each other in the middle and soon we will be almost indistinguishabke and I will be super fashionable!

Teachers at my DC's school are actually pretty well dressed.

Any job which involves a uniform consisting of trousers for women - they never fit and always look hideous.

As a lawyer I think most of my colleagues dress pretty well- especially the junior and senior. Those of us in the middle tend to have given up on $800 suits to pay school fees

As no one has yet mentioned vets I'll put them out there and I don't just mean when they're working (because cowshit and so on does nothing for anyones style!)

For the older men checked shirts and hairy ties abound and the women aren't any better - lots of ill fitting slightly short trousers and fleece.

YY to MALE solicitors - London or elsewhere - crumpled suits, badly ironed shirts, lunch stained ties, ghastly v neck tank top if cold, dandruff, bad haircut, dirty shoes possibly grey slip ons (yes I saw them and I shudder). It is mainly an age thing in that the older ones tend to look like that and maybe mercifully are close to retirement now. But I remember thinking that if the women in the office had dressed equally badly they would have mentioned it at appraisal time.

Teachers seem to have really gone down hill since I was at school. When DS started school I couldn't believe that jeans and leggings were acceptable "workwear".
4 members of my family are teachers, 2 male , 2 female; 2 secondary, 1 primary, 1 adult ed - the males always wear a shirt and tie; of the two females the secondary one always wears a fabulous looking suit ( and she teaches biology which can be very messy - dissecting frogs etc) and the other female tends to wear well cut trousers and a smart top.
When I was at school female staff had to wear skirts/dresses, could not have bare legs in winter or summer and had to carry a handbag ( one teacher was sent home for non-compliance). They were a great example.
I don't think jeans are appropriate in any professional job - social worker, doctor, teacher, accountant, lawyer etc etc.

And I BTW I don't think is is necessary for anyone to look "stylish" at work ( unless you work in fashion) I'd go for polished and professional everytime. Hair tied back ( both sexes), clean nails, polished shoes, opaque tops, everything ironed, no plunging necklines or short skirts, and legs covered - I hate bare legs on women. I don't care how hot it.

The worst dressed are the women (past and present) who do the letters and the numbers on Countdown. It detracts me from my anagramming.

Too tight, too short, too long, too ugly, too wierd...... Lots of variety but in a bad way.

Ps I am not being sexist, I would say the same if the blokes wore those outfits

I worked in Bangkok for a bit where people are extremely focused on physical appearance and I was once sent home to put make-up on

When I was younger, there was a certain look, particular to art teachers. Mostly involved brightly coloured tights that baggied around the ankle, and polo necks worn with chunky necklaces and waistcoats.

The art teachers I know nowadays look normal.

I'm very glad that academia doesn't insist on 'polished and professional'. Ironing! Gah. And polishing shoes.

I don't have a problem with short skirts or bare legs at work (on either gender, tbh). I personally wouldn't combine the two, purely because I think my legs need nice thick tights to get away with a short skirt. One of my lecturers came to the post-ceremony drinks reception at my UG university wearing neon shorts and a t-shirt (it was warm). It made for hilarious graduation photos.

I think people should be positively encouraged to wear weather appropriate clothes to work. There can be nothing worse that a room full of people sweltering in suits on a hot day. Eurgh.

My Gp practice is full of shockers. A couple of old blokes in crumpled shirts, accessorized with nostril hair. Waterfall cardis and awful long frumpy skirts seem to be de rigeur for the females.

Teachers seem to all wear leggings these days.
