Investment buys this year?

Am planning this year's big investment buy pieces....thought a Brora cashmere cardigan might be just the thing but it just did nothing for me, great colour but I put it on and thought it looked a bit old lady, don't know what I was expecting but new rule if it doesn't make me feel fab it's going back.
Also planned, after the January diet, is to treat myself to my first pair of premium denim jeans (any London stores that stock a good selection and can any point me towards a brand that suits the small waisted?) and some underwear and maybe finally find the prefect white shirt.

Would be interested to hear everyone else's wardrobe plans....and maybe get some inspiration for other bits and pieces that I can't live without. Wink

I thing that's a great plan! I want to get:

Good quality, well fitted Trench coat
Well fitted black trousers
Some merino wool polo necks
Good quality underwear
Some 'capsule' work wear

All to happen after DC2 arrives and have had a few months to get over the birth etc.

The main thing I want to concentrate on is quality fabric, good fit and sticking to colours that suit.

Anthropologie have lots of premium brand jeans (mostly stevies which American bloggers seem to swear by) but they are £££

AmberNectarine · 11/01/2013 12:29

Flat shoes for me. Jimmy Choo slippers and Balenciaga gladiators.

I did some investment shopping last night, 2 dresses (DKNY and Brora), silk blouse (A&W), APC stripe jumper and woolovers black jumper - all posted on the Vogue thread. I now have to take a 2-3 month shopping break as I spent way more than usual.

I am turning 40 this year and have decided it's about time I had a grown up wardrobe of nice clothes. Also on my list for this year is:

Jeans - I want ones that fit really well and make my ass look good so if that means premium I will just have to save.
Well fitting trousers for both work and casual wear (although I am considering giving up on trousers and instead embracing my pear shape with a wardrobe of gorgeous dresses and skirts)
Merrel or similiar waterproof coat
Flat snakeskin shoes
Ash high tops or similiar (not wedges!)
Perfect fitting black pencil skirt
Leather jacket - was considering a biker but not sure that is the right shape for me so plan to spend time hunting one out. I have an image in my head of a black, slightly distressed blazer style one with pockets I can shove my hands into and look all cool and nonchalent Smile
Silver jewellery - cuff, layering necklace, chunky stainless steel watch - will probably encourage DH to get this stuff for my birthday.

A handbag, mulberry possibly though I'm not as kern after the thread about them being heavy!
A good trench!

Tahitian pearls or a triple strand of white freshwater pearls.
A red wool cocoon coat if I find one.
Random things from end of season sales.

insertsomethingwitty · 11/01/2013 13:40

A mid length wool coat and the perfect pair of jeans. Not entirely sure where to start looking for either. Have seen loads of wool coats online just haven't found the perfect one yet.

Hey libertychick, I too am 40 this year. On my wish list of investment buys/gifts are:
Grey handbag
Rose gold watch
Silver cuff
Single or double strand pearl necklace

I don't tend to do investment clothes preferring the high street instead.

slug · 11/01/2013 14:38

In the sales I bought this dress I have another one from that label and they suit both my shape and job.

Paintyourbox · 11/01/2013 14:40

Jeans which don't go baggy at the arse
A black leather tote for work (needs to be quite large)
Nice underwear (when I stop bfing and deflate!)

bonzo77 · 11/01/2013 14:56

My investment is to stop buying lots of cheap crap. Ive spent most of the last 3.5 years either pregnant or trying to be or carrying baby weight. i don't have that excuse now. My wardrobe is stuffed with "bargains" that Have washed badly or never fit. I'm about to take several pairs of ill fitting jeans to the charity shop. Have just spent 95 gbp on Levi's curve skinnies and they're worth it. Last year I got a north face coat, a massive improvement on previous cheap topshop and bench ones. Real ugg kensingtons instead of rocketdogs. Panache bra instead of m&s.

I'm still after basic tshirts (longer length, bright colours, high cotton content and just the right shape).
Ditto nighties, but 100% cotton.

dontyouwantmebaby · 11/01/2013 15:36

snowkey - if you are looking for jeans in London, Selfridges is your answer. The staff at the jeans counter will be able to show you exactly what jeans to buy whatever your shape/size. I cannot recommend it highly enough after searching high & low for jeans and never finding ones that would comfortably fit.

once I have made progress on my diet Blush, another good pair of jeans will be my investment this year.

have already purchased knee-length black leather boots from Duo this year which I hope will last as long as the brown ones I bought years ago.

Snowkey · 11/01/2013 16:57

I did wonder if Selfridges would suit dontyouwantme, just happens to be my favourite department store but I spend most of my time looking at the foodie gadgets in the basement. [Blush] Will have a look at the Stevies too silver, are they particularly recommended for those of us with small waist, large hip/thigh?

Big yes to investment shopping. Am 37 this year and intend to stop buying crap. Instead I want to buy fewer good quality items.
I have just bought a great burgundy leather biker jacket. It makes me feel great and goes with almost everything I already own. So this is a good start.
I would also like:
A well fitting trench
A cashmere crop cardi (have one in ivory on order from Boden to try)
A stainless steel mondial watch
