Why do NEXT have to sell Skinny Jeans for little girls in their childrenswear department? Do children as young as four and five really clothing labelled skinny jeans?

Don't most retailers who sell children's clothes include skinny jeans in their ranges now?

If you prefer your DD to wear bootcut or wide leg or whatever, those are available too aren't they?

Or am I missing the issue entirely?

LadyStark · 06/01/2013 12:03

My DD is very skinny so I'm always pleased to see skinny ranges, nothing else fits. It is just a style of jeans.

QuietNinjaTardis · 06/01/2013 12:04

They do skinny jeans for babies. Insist the word skinny that's putting you off? It's a description same as wide leg trousers or boot cut.

lauriedriver · 06/01/2013 12:05

Not that different to little girls wearing leggings really?

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 06/01/2013 12:05

It's simply the name of the style of trousers- bootleg, combat, boyfriend etc.
Not anything to do with the wearer's size or shape.

DameFannyGallopsBEHINDyou · 06/01/2013 12:06

I always look for skinny jeans for ds because he's a skinny boy. Don't worry so much :-)

mellen · 06/01/2013 12:06

? Its a descriptive term for the style, why shouldn't they wear jeans like that?

GeeinItLaldy · 06/01/2013 12:07

Just about ever kids clothing retailer I've looked at lately sells skinny jeans for girls and boys, from babies onwards. I wouldn't dress my DD in them as i reckon they can't be that comfortable for a baby but each to their own. Can't see how they're that different from leggings in terms of shape/cut.

GeeinItLaldy · 06/01/2013 12:10

Ah, is it the name? Still don't see the problem. It's just a description of shape and the most commonly used term for that cut.

NorbertDentressangle · 06/01/2013 12:12

Can't see the problem myself. They're just a style of jeans

I'd be more concerned about the mini hooker mini-adult sparkly/ spangly/ cropped/ mini /partywear/heels that they sell for little girls

Willowisp · 06/01/2013 12:12

My 9 yr old had skinny jeans & they are as baggy as anything !

Think it's a shame to have tight stuff on little kids, but apart from actual tights, everything seems to be loose !

PoppyWearer · 06/01/2013 12:13

I agree with laurie, surely not much different to leggings?

SaraBellumHertz · 06/01/2013 12:13

The name's descriptive.

Skinny jeans are great for kids, no soggy ankles as they're tucked neatly in boots.

lunar1 · 06/01/2013 12:14

Ds1 always has slim fit or carrot fit from next otherwise they are huge on him. What's more alarming is that you can now have a plus size for 3 year olds in there

Five4Three2One · 06/01/2013 12:15

Oh dear, I seem to have ruffled a few feathers. My DD is occassionally teased for being slightly overweight and was very upset when she was told she was fat and not skinny. The label 'skinny' on kids jeans is not helping. Why can't kids be kids without having to think about being skinny or fat?

OP posts:
ToastedTeacakes · 06/01/2013 12:16

A bit off topic, but I clearly recall being around 8 yrs old and wearing a pair of tight cut cord pants for the very first time. I had always previously worn dresses. The slim cut of the pants really caught my attention and made me wonder about the largeness of my thighs. Not in a disordered sense, mind, but it sure as hell brought my attention to the size of bodyparts that I had never even considered before.
Skinnies are just a cut, yes, but they are certainly revealing of the body shape, which seems odd to me when thinking about designing them for kids. I know it's just for fun and mini adult stuff to the manufacturers, but the kids will identify them with grown ups, to some extent, and could become more aware of their figure at a very early age.

That said, I am not opposed to this kind of thing. Just remembering my own experience.

VivaLeBeaver · 06/01/2013 12:17

It's the jeans that are skinny, not the wearer.

I'm definitely not skinny but I can fit in skiing jeans if I buy the right size. Whether they look good on me or not is a different matter. Grin

JambalayaCodfishPie · 06/01/2013 12:18

Skinny describes the jeans style, not body shape. Large people wear skinny jeans.

flowerytaleofNewYork · 06/01/2013 12:18

I really don't think anyone's feathers are ruffled, are they?

If your DD is being teased about her weight, I also really don't think the label Next put on their skinny jeans is the issue.

ToastedTeacakes · 06/01/2013 12:19

Also, I was a very think kid when wearing those cords and still pulled at the available fat on my thighs asking my mum were they jiggly. I agree that this style (and particularly the thinness obsessed culture they are a result of) will bring some level of self exploratory awareness to little girls, for good or ill.

ToastedTeacakes · 06/01/2013 12:19

thin kid.

werewolvesdidit · 06/01/2013 12:20

I buy 'skinny' jeans and believe me I am anything but! I suppose tight fit or narrow fit might be less loaded phrases to describe that particular cut.

I can see where you are coming from op. The word skinny here implies something desirable. I remember being 10 and knickerbockers were all the rage. My 9 year old sister got some but I was told that I was too fat to suit them and had to wear a dress instead :( It still makes me sad - and I'm still fat 32 years later so it obviously didn't have the effect my parents wanted.

PostBellumBugsy · 06/01/2013 12:23

I think the reference to "skinny" when describing clothing is not that they are for skinny people (given you can get size 18 skinny jeans) but that they are supposed to be a "skin tight" fit.
I for one am hugely relieved you can get kids clothes in skinny fit, as DD is a veritable bean pole & even skinny fit trousers are still baggy on her.
DS is a bit chubby, so obviously I steer away from those type of trousers when guiding him what to get (he's a teen, so I don't have full control anymore!).

I don't really think either of my two define their own body shape by the type of name their clothes have. I prefer boot fit cuts of trousers, but I don't think I have boot fit legs! Grin

Startail · 06/01/2013 12:23

It simply means jeans that will tuck in boots nicely and fit under long tops neatly.

ie. Jeans that will replace leggings and not show DDs knickers.

Also when my 11yo tried some on that were too tight she told the jeans off for being too skinny not her legs for being too fat. She is exactly average and very happy being so.
