Plus size dress

I have a wedding to go to at the end of January and I need something nice to wear. It's a posh wedding and I think I would look odd if I wasn't in a dress. I am huge so I'm going to look horrible anyway so might aswell look like I've made the effort!

I'm 5'9 and a size 22 please help! I mostly wear black, would black be ok for a wedding?

Black is fine. You can accessorise with colour with shoes, bag, shrug and chunky bling.

I am also huge but not as tall as you. I have the green dress from here and, quite frankly, with high heels and lipstick I look H.O.T. in it.

So don't wear black. Wear something lovely and sparkle in your enormous gorgeousness.

Simply Be have some lovely dresses, or Evans. I wore a maxi dress, black with coral butterflies on for my cousins wedding. £50 from Evans. They also had a gorgeous blue chiffon dress but it was £75 and too long. Littlewoods catalogue worth a look too.

Wow those dresses are lovely, I forgot to say I have huge legs so it must be a long dress and I would never ever wear anything short.

Have a look at monsoon, they have some lovely long dresses and go up to 22. their sizes seem to be on the large size too.

Im 5ft9 and a size 22.

I find new looks maxi dresses a bit too short.

I wear short dresses with black opaque tights because I cant find maxi dresses long enough.

Don't like that one, sorry moomoomar- it looks like a paper bag. I think it's the drawstring waist. A better cut will be more flattering.

oh shit, i really should have started looking or maybe dieting a while ago!

I love that last black dress teathers but way over my budget. I love the midi lenght one too but I just wouldn't be able to wear it with my legs.

This may sound silly but do we as a family have to match? I mean would we look odd if we all went in different colours? DD1 age 7 got her dress last week and its a peach colour, it is lovely and has a jacket to match. They had the same colour but different style but dd2 refused to wear it as she thought it was abit babyish. DH will probably just wear a suit.

Can you tell ive never been to a wedding(apart from my own) before.

Aw, your little girls dress is very pretty. I don't think you need to co-ordinate as a family, I think just that you match in terms of effort/style maybe, so if it's a casual small wedding or if its a big formal wedding you all look as if you are at the same event.

Oh I just noticed some of those are sold out in your size. I think this is really pretty and it's a bit different from black.

I like number 2, I will pop into my local Yours and see if they have any. The last one from simply be is very nice but i don't think it will look right on me though.

It is a very big formal wedding which is why i'm worring so much :(

I have this in a 20 but I'm much shorter than you but opaque tights are your friend with a pair of heels I've yet to see a pair of unsightly legs!

I don't think you need to match dd. but try not to clash or worse, try to match but be a different tone/shade.

They are lovely Glaikit but I can't see myself in any of those. I'm thinking more floaty. I think i will stick to black and get dd2 something similar to dd1then hopefully we wont clash.

moomoo You need to give yourself a bloody good talking to because you are being horrible to yourself! You are not a diet-failing hippo who can only be seen in black as though you're a whale moving silently through the oceans. A size 22 is not even worthy of a front row seat on a Richard Simmons cruise! I bet if I were to see you in Tesco you'd not even raise an eyebrow!

If you're not going to show your legs, how about a little cleavage?

Get yourself some bloody colour, a pair of nice heels and get your face on.

How dare you talk to yourself like that? What sort of a message are you sending to your girls?

Igigi do some amazing stuff - my wedding dress was from there - I'm only 5'4" and had to wear 6" heels so at 5'9" you'd find them plenty long enough! I know Igigi is probably over your budget but I hope it can inspire you as to just how beautiful clothes can be in such a size.

There are also plenty of "plus size" blogs out there written by larger women who have bags of style and look fabulous. There are plenty of slimmer women out there who look like a bag of washing - style is not dependent upon size!

I agree with Dolomites.

I am the same size as you and while I realise I could do with losing a few pounds I have certainly never thought of myself as "huge."

Thing is, you could live your life unhappy, hating your size, or you could learn how to dress for your shape and work it.

Dresses which create a waist and skim or hide the hips (and in my case the tummy) are your friend. Something like this is maybe a bit out there for your tastes but is so flattering on us larger girls.

Some of the dresses Glaikit suggested are gorgeous and that Igigi dress is stunning!
Try to experiment with different styles in changing rooms, where only you can see, whats the harm? Then atleast you can get used to different styles first and figure out what you like. If you want to stick to black then ok, but introduce colour with your accessories.

I read some of the blogs Dolomites mentioned, I will try and get some links for you!
