New work wardrobe, help!

I am putting together a "new wardrobe for the new year" type thing as I realised I look like a total slob could look more professional and groomed in the office. I have also been off for 3 months sick but am going back and would like to look well to feel more confident.

I work in Marketing and the dress code is casual. The girls basically have a fashion show every day though, so the "casual" can extend to body con dresses, lace-panel blouses and shorts with opaques, killer heels, that sort of thing.

I would like to look classy and be comfortable. Also our office has extremes of temperature. The meeting rooms are either like saunas or completely baltic, and the communal working area is quite warm. So I usually resort to wearing a cardi over top & skinny jeans but it just looks blah.

I am 5ft 5in, size 8, v pale brunette. Any ideas for nice outfits I could put together? I realise I have been a bit vague so let me know if you need further details.

I work in the stuffiest of professions (lawyer!) but I always think a black pencil skirt with black tights looks lovely with everything. It instantly makes an outfit look polished. Could you get a black pencil skirt, then put it with the tops and cardigans you would normally wear with jeans?

Thanks Gradually. I tend to find with pencil skirts that they fit really nicely at the start of the day, but after lunch dig into my (admittedly bloated) tummy so much that they hurt. I bloat up every day so I need something forgiving around the middle!

Stop eating wheat at lunchtime and drink more water - should stop the afternoon bloat

Have you ever been on Pinterest to get ideas from there?

Ho my gawd, how can you NOT know what Pinterest is?! It's fab. Addictive virtual pinboard. There's a women's fashion section. Pretty American-centric but great for inspiration nonetheless. pinterest.com/all/?category=womens_fashion

Jeans are not a good look right now, IMO.

Since you are petite with pale colouring, you probably should try colour blocking in order to be more visible and appear more self-assured. How about a power cardie à la Michelle Obama, over a sleeveless dress?

tak1ngchances · 29/12/2012 17:01

Bonsoir I like what you are saying. Agree jeans are best kept for casual. Colour-blocking suits me a lot. Basically things that looked nice on Monica in friends look good on me.

Heading over to Pinterest now...
