please help me get my blonde highlights back

I have had blonde highlights in my dark brown hair since late teenage years. I decided to go back brown last year and have been dark for a year now. I desperately want my blonde highlights back. I don't feel like me any more and look much better with my highlights in. Everyone has said the same. The problem is I went to a very expensive salon to get this done back in August and the guy ruined my hair. The bleach didn't lift at all and I ended up with a mishmash of orange/light brown and ended up having to go dark again. I really don't want another disaster but need to be blonde. My hair at the moment is very healthy and a dark brown with a very orange tone to it. I've been desperately trying to fade with Vosene, baking soda, vitamin C but it stays very dark. My question is should I use a colour remover? I know I will then end up with orange hair but what do I do to it then? I only want highlights so will need to keep some kind of a darker base. Also is it okay to bleach on top of colour remover or will my hair snap? I will definately be getting this done at the hairdressers but they don't even seem able to do it as it is at the moment. I thought if i colour remove it first then they will be able to get a better lift on the colour? Does anyone know anything about hair colour to be able to advise me? Feeling very frumpy and invisible at the moment and want to have this done in the new year. Please help!

If I was going to have a go at it at home I would get a dye stripper, and then a semi permanent ash blonde.

I assume you want a lighter brown/ dark blonde base and then put highlights in?

So I'd aim to lighten the whole lot, and then when I thought I have let it recover, get the highlights put in.

If you are very red toned then you might have to put up with being gingerer (yes it's a word Xmas Wink) than you will finally aim for, but you can definitely get there.

go to another salon and get bleach highlights, then they will add a toner to go the colour you want

you really won't be able to do it at home

Hi thanks for the replies. I am definitely going to a salon for the highlights but even their bleach doesn't seem to lift enough to get a decent blonde. They used a toner last time when it hadn't lifted enough and it went a horrible rusty colour. That's why I thought I'd go for the colour stripper. Not sure of the results though as I've got roots, previous highlights and one hair disaster underneath the brown! I was thinking of going along the lines of what you've suggested, NagooHoHoHo but a bit scared!
