Handbag help, please!

My niece wants a new handbag for Christmas. Only guidelines I have are as to size - about 20cm wide, 14cm high and 7cm deep, and it needs to have a shoulder strap.

My budget is about £40.

I've been all through the John Lewis website and found one Warehouse one that was about right, but it was over £30 and made of plastic, which I didn't think was too impressive. Also the Cath Kidston mini saddlebag is about the right size but only seems to come in two colourways, and I'm not sure how 'serious' she wants it.

Would appreciate any suggestions. I am utterly crap at handbags. I do have a TK Maxx locally though, so can have a look in there.

Have you tried Asos?

MissNJE · 14/12/2012 08:56

Yes, would suggest Asos too. What is her usual style?

LadyWellian · 14/12/2012 09:37

She's 21 and a student, so style varies from baggy jumper/leggings/Uggs to full on party gear and ridiculous heels.

I'll have a look at Asos - thanks.

Meantime, any other suggestions also appreciated.

OK, your thoughts on this shortlist, please.

The only non-black one - she does like horses, though.

Quite like this but maybe a bit plasticky?

A bit too square?

Studs might work - she has a tongue piercing - but again worried it might look tacky.

Faux Chanel-type; not sure if that's quite her, though she is studying in Oxford Xmas Grin

Bit frustrated by the lack of dimensions, given that's all I had to work with! Have had to go on how big they look on the models.

River Island is the shop of choice for handbags for my teenage daughters

Goandplay · 15/12/2012 05:22
  1. I like this one
  2. Thought this one was ok - but nothing special
  3. I personally don't like fringing
  4. Ok
  5. I agree also seen a lot if these about

River Island is a good shout and maybe Top Shop and Aldo...

Goandplay · 15/12/2012 05:28

On my phone sorry for long link address. Top Shop have dimensions.

Oasis and topshop are strong on bags this season. Asos and TKMaxx are also worth a look. I bought a nice nubuck one recently from oasis for £28

CeeceeBloomingdale · 15/12/2012 09:17

This one and I used a 30% off code

www.oasis-stores.com/fcp-product/5330018509 this is nice and also available in black. Annoyingly no sizes on it though

Goandplay · 15/12/2012 11:26

Lovely bags from Oasis! I've had a leather bag from Oasis that gets better with every year!

LadyWellian · 17/12/2012 14:01

Thanks for all these. I went to TK Maxx with DD (nearly 13) and she chose one. Hope DN likes it! I can blame DD if not. Xmas Grin
