Perioral dermatitis treatment and make up

I've posted this in general health, but thought with it being make up related i might get a response here too.

I recently saw my GP about perioral dermatitis (lumpy red rash around mouth) and was advised to stop all products and cosmetics and return in two weeks if no improvement.

I did as she advised but i'm back at the GPs tomorrow and its got worse (spread to under my eyes) so i expect (& hope) she'll prescribe some antibiotics because my whole face will become enveloped soon at this rate

my question is one of pure vanity....out of the people who have been treated successfully for perioral dermatitis with antibiotics, were you allowed/did you wear make up during treatment? I dont want to wear it every day but would LOVE to hear wearing a nice tinted moisturiser once or twice a week wont affect the treatment

It's really hard to use anything cream based as it will gather in the dry/scaly bits. You could try a mineral powder but it may also give an uneven coverage.

What I have tried and helped speed up recovery was Salcura intense spray and Zeoderm cream. It doesn't get rid forever but calms down so you can use some cream based cover up.

I've used loads of tinted moisturisers to try and find 'the one'. Currently I'm using Clinique tinted moisturiser finished with Clinique mineral powder and a bit of Clinique 'aglow' blusher. I personally have found that Clinique make up is the best for me BUT do not go near the cleansing/moisturising products.

Hope it clears up soon, I know what a nightmare it is when you get it on your face. I also get on my neck, arms, legs and sometimes even in my armpits!!! It's a terror.

oh wow T2T on the armpits sounds horrible, its like creeping ivy at the moment, slowly spreading across my face urrrrrrrrrrfff

thanks for the tips on the salcura and zeoderm just had a quick squizz on amazon and they look good, i'll see what the doc says tomoro but will probably end up ordering both!

which treatment do you find works best for you T2T? and how long does it take to treat a flare up?

Intense is the best, you could probably get away with just that. I sometimes found the Zeoderm a bit stingy but using them together usually made things work a bit more quickly.

Using the intense on it's own usually gives noticable results within about 3 days if used 3 times a day. I like it because it's not got any steroids in it. However when I get a really bad case of it, it's really only steroids that seem to shift it. I really hate using them though, especially on my face so def give intense a try for a week or so before using betnovate etc!

I think the Salcura website do a small trial set for about £5 or so. You can also get it in some pharmacies/larger boots.

You need those antib. I got it but mine was suspected to be caused by contact with my DS steroid cream. It was in my chin only.

It cleared up fast with antib, about 3 weeks but I'd had it for about 8 weeks. I work in a profession where appearance is important and I stressed this to my GP. I was immediately prescribed the antibiotics.

MakE up wise, I did continue to use it sparingly, on certain days. I don't think it had any impact on healing once the antib kicked in. I used pure virgin coconut oil on the patch to help with the flaky during days off and at night.

I have changed my cleanse routine since, using the coconut oil as a cleanser wiped off with flannel, and a new moisturiser day and night, more because my usual one got discontinued.

I am now using Liz Earle cleanser and like it. I bought lots of spare clothes though.

i've ordered the free trial pack off the salcura website, a little bit of everything for free and just £2 postage to pay. MAGIC

just back form the docs and I've been given topical antibiotics, metronidazole, the lovely pharmacist said as long as i give it a good 30 mins after an application of the antibiotic i can put a bit of make up on

i'm doubtful the cream wil work, but even if it stops it spreading i'll be happy!

I'd give it a week or two, but the specific antibiotic that hit it for me was doxycycline 50mg. I had to take it for 6 weeks. I think your GP is not taking the most direct route.
I was never offered anything else, just this to clear it up as quickly as possible.

i've made a follow up appt for 3 weeks time so if there's no improvement i'll ask for the oral tablets. I think she just wants to try everything before oral antibiotics which i can understand, i'm just glad she's diagnosed somthing and i've started down a treatment route

Metronidazole cleared mine up. No need for antibiotics for me. It took about 6 weeks though. Hope it works for you, i know how rubbish p o derm is!

Ps I have avoided makeup (foundation) for about 5 months now, as am sure maybelline was the trigger for me, but have recently started wearing stuff again and all fine so far.

I had something similar as a child and was given oral abx. Just be careful it doesn't spread to your eyes.

oh no topsi, its already on my eyes :( it started on one last week and then appeaered under the other the other day, the doc didnt seem perturbed she just said to moisturise rather than apply the antibiotic and that it was probably more to do with being run down. has anybody else had it on their eyes? it is more sore there than anywhere else :(

When I was a child I had a skin infection that started in the corner of my mouth and slowly spread accross my face. My mum put off me going to the Dr when he saw it he said I had done the right thing in coming to see him as it was important that the infection had not reached my eyes.
I cannot say if you have the same thing as me but that is what happened.

its ok she didnt seem too worried that it was under my eyes, although she did tell me not to apply the antibiotic there, so i guess she's just hoping it clears itself up

I would try something like a mineral make up and I would go for Lily Lilo - I use Bare Minerals but it has bismuth in it which can be an irritant.

Only Erythromycin works for me but I also use Avene Antirougers which takes the redness out of the rash whilst the blisters reduce. I also use some BB cream which hasn't caused any problems so far.

Their samples last a good two weeks ime so good value - use a good brush and tip out a bit of powder into a saucer, swirl your brush in and tap off the excess then apply in small circular movements.

I get peri oral derm too, doxycycline cleared it up last time, but had to take it for 2 months to be effective. You shouldn't use steroid cream on it as will make it worse even if it feels like the only thing that will shift it
I have found tesco haemorrhoid cream (!) really helpful - lidocaine and white petroleum jelly - is enough topical anaesthetic to stop the stingy feeling which means you leave your face alone and it can heal. Sounds weird but helps me when I get the tingly dry skin feeling.

I friend proskin eczema works well for perioralis dermatitis. A friend of mine got this after taking the pill and her face broke out really bad. I recommended the proskin to her and it cleared it all away. The antibiotics helped her at first then stopped working.

I'm prescribed tetralysal (orally) for my PD which clears it up very quickly and I use Zeoderm on a daily basis. Then I use Bourjois cc cream which does seem to aggravate it.

SLS in shampoo can trigger it so I'd look to swap those out too.

Oh, and I always rinse thoroughly around my mouth after cleaning teeth because the fluoride triggers it too. I couldn't get on with non fluoride tooth paste.

Finally PD often goes to the eyes ☹️ But it's not dangerous. I'd try to get prescribed the oral ABs a sap.
