Scent for men

My DH has asked for some for Christmas & I don't know where to start to be honest.
It's always been Eau Sauvage but, being lemony & fresh, I always think of this as summer & he fancies something warmer smelling for winter. Perhaps woodsy?
Personally, I really don't like strong orientals so not keen on getting him one that might give me a headache.
Are there any you love to smell on on a man? Or could you just guide me in the right direction, please, so I don't have to work through every bottle on the shelves?

Lyn Harris has just bought out a range for M+S which I am really loving at the moment. 3 male scents and 3 female scents. Personally I am loving the male scents and have bought 'Le Noir' (dark and woodsy) which I think smells like winter in a bottle and le Sauvage (citrusy) for the OH with a view to stealing them for myself!

They had 20% off at the weekend which meant they were £20 for 50ml. An absolute bargain!

I'm reposting a list I posted last week on the Perfumista thread. Some of the greatest masculines ever (a list compiled by a male perfume lover who knows a lot about perfume).

Terre d'Hermes is a modern classic - not citrusy but subtly woody and might work on someone who loves Eau Sauvage (which, imo, is one of the greatest perfumes ever made) - not in-your-face, it has a subtle aura of confidence. I love the richer 'parfum' concentration (and don't buy the new 'parfum' version of Eau Sauvage - it's disappointing). Would also like to smell Habit Rouge on a daily basis - citrus woven together with a lot of depth and warmth. Whatever you pick, sample first (at least on a strip - perhaps on your skin too).

The list:

Caron Pour un Homme, Knize Ten, Aramis Classic, Eau d?Hermes, Sables or Eau de Monsieur or Duel by Annick Goutal, Yatagan (Caron), Rochas Man, Fahrenheit (Dior), Givenchy Gentleman, Santal Noble (Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier), Parfum d?Habit (Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier), Centaure (Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier), Body Kouros (YSL), Au Masculin (Lempicka), Fuel for Men, M7 (YSL), Azzaro Pour Homme, Amouage Gold for Men, Obsession for Men (CK), Le troisieme Homme (Caron), Comme des Garcons 2 Man, Czech & Speake Cuba, Dior Homme, A*Men (Mugler), Dolce&Gabbana Pour Homme, Beyond Paradise Men (Lauder), Grey Flannel (Beene), Pi (Givenchy), Gucci Pour Homme (2003), Habit Rouge (Guerlain), Bel Ami (Hermes), Mouchoir de Monsieur (Guerlain), Vetiver (Guerlain), Terre d?Hermes, Declaration (Cartier), Joop! Homme, Kenzo Air, Nasomatto Duro, Black XS (Rabanne), Pascal Morabito Or Black, Old Spice, Polo (Lauren), Midnight in Paris (Van Cleef & Arpels), The Dreamer (Versace), New York (de Nicolai), Chanel Pour Monsieur, Antaeus (Chanel), Egoiste (Chanel), Eau Sauvage (Dior), Lagerfeld Classic, Salvador Dali Pour Homme, Kouros (YSL), Cool Water (Davidoff), Drakkar Noir (Laroche), Green Irish Tweed (Creed), 1 Million (Rabanne), Le Male (Gaultier), Le Dandy (D?Orsay), Ormonde Man (Ormonde Jayne), Tabac Original.

My personal favorites from this list, in addition to Eau Sauvage: Yatagan (herby and dense), Azzaro pour Homme (classic fougere, old-school male, good retro vibe), Habit Rouge (elegance), A*men (great gourmand), Terre (modern metrosexual vibe), Declaration (yummy cardamom), Antaeus (very well-done herby leather).

The M&S ones are deffo worth a sniff. Paul Smith does nice ones which are on offer everywhere at the mo, if you don't want to spend a fortune. If you DO have a fortune to spend, I'd say Tom Ford is the man.

My husband wears L'Homme by Lanvin. It is lovely and I never heard of anyone else wearing it. I think Jo Malone Sweet Lime and Cedar is nice for a man and quite subtle. Also the Serge Lutens man one.

Thank you so much Smile
That's very helpful.
Lots sound wonderful & the M&S ones are certainly worth a look! Just hope they stock them in my smallish local branch. Ordering online is too much of a lottery without testing first.

Another plea for help. I've tried looking on various websites and it has left me even more baffled.
My DH would like me to find a sandalwood/warm/spice and doesn't mind patchoulli hints.
Help, please?

Would recommend Victor and Rolf Spicebomb, although I dislike the packaging.

I got Cerrutti 1881 for DP last year and though it is pretty retro people comment on how good it smells on him.

HaveAGoodDay · 04/12/2012 18:27
