Waterproofing suede Qs

I hanker after some dark brown mid-calf suede boots. Low heel that I can walk for miles wearing in the city. Practical for wet and wind.

I read that one should waterproof treat suede every 3-4 wears in the wet, is that right? . That the spray-on waterproofing chemicals stink to high heaven. That even the so-called waterproof suede boots (Merrells) they still get stained by water if wet (is that right??) unless the suede is regularly treated with the spray on waterproof stuff.

Is that all true in your experience? Just seems like a lot of extra expense & faff if I choose suede. I would happily go for a fake suede look boot, if it existed in durable handsome quality, low heel, comfy, etc.

When Merrell say the boot is waterproof, they mean there is a waterproof coating or membrane in between the outer and the inner. The leather outer has to be treated with wax or spray as appropriate or it will get water/salt marks.

The spray I have (Grangers) smells of PVA. Bit different formulation to the plain old glue though, to make it sprayable and to adhere to the leather/suede/fabric.

I love suede, and my current best technique is to look after the suede shoes/boots that are in regular use once a week (I attempt to do Sunday night prep for the week, doesn't always happen!). I brush them lightly with a suede brush and use a stiffer brush/rubber thing (it's on the back of my suede brush) to get rid of marks. Then spray fairly lightly with suede protector spray, leave for a minute or two and spray again. Make sure you spray outside as most protector sprays are insanely toxic.

I reckon a can of spray lasts me 3 months or so, and I do 2 pairs of boots most weeks. Well worth it for me as I hate matte leather, so most of my footwear is patent or suede.

ah, thanks for f/back. The shops were recommending oozy brush rather than spray, any reason not to do oozy brush waterproof chemical, do you think?

I asked in shops today & they suggested weekly treatment for first month & every 3-6 months thereafter.
