How do I wear flat, brown, knee-high boots?

Last Christmas, my husband bought me a pair of knee-high boots from Dune. They're really gorgeous, but I've never worn them! This time last year, I was pregnant and water retention and general puffiness meant that they just weren't comfortable. Now I reckon I could get them on, but I'm not a leggings/jeggings wearer. I'm not large - 5'3" and a size 12, but I still have fairly chunky legs. I see women wearing boots like these OVER their jeans and I don't know how they do it! I mean, presumably they're wearing socks too? These boots have an elasticated panel at the back, but they're still snug, especially around the ankle. Do you think I should persevere and try to break them in? They are leather and I treated them with a leather protecting spray when I got them. If you think I should get leggings or jeggings, then what colour and where do you get good ones? Or do people wear stirrup pants with them - do you still get them?? I'm going to look on the Dune website and see if I can post a link to show you the boots I mean.

These are the exact boots, and I bet he paid full price for them too! No way would I have thought of them as "biker boots". The website suggests wearing them with "patterned tights and cutoffs"! It is difficult for me to explain how unwilling I would be to go out in public wearing such an outfit, but the words "mutton" and "lamb" do spring to mind.

I'm wearing a pair today, not too dissimilar. I have them on with chocolate brown tights and a denim shirt dress with brown belt.

I probably look a bit cowgirl, but I don't care.

I also wear long boots with tights and jersey wrap dresses.

Lovely boots.

Chunky knit tights (either brown or cream) with a dress would work

Or try jeggings rather than jeans. I have very chunky calves but manage to get my boots over my jeggings just (about). M&S - teal?

They are lovely. I have a very similar pair that I wear all the time.

Sometimes I just wear ordinary bootcut jeans over them, so they just look like ordinary boots, but they keep my legs nice and snug.

I've got a pair of cut-off jeans (mid-calf length). I wear them in the summer with flats, then come the winter I wear them with my knee-high boots.

I also wear them with brown tights and denim/corduroy skirts.

Don't want to hijack, but ceeveebee, do you know where I can find a pair of chunky-knit cream tights? I've been on the look-out for ages.

I've got some that are very similar. I wear them with chunky tights and dresses, leggings and long jumpers and sometimes with my skinny jeans.

I pop my socks over my jeans to keep a smooth line IYSWIM. It looks good IMhumbleO. Grin

On your feet. You could try them on your hands but it's quite dangerous to drive and very difficult to change nappies.

Ormiriathomimus · 29/11/2012 16:16

Sorry Grin

I wear high boots all the time, preferably with flat heels. Leggings, opaque or knitted tights, short skirts and dresses. Skinny jeans. Not long skirts.

ceeveebee · 29/11/2012 16:22

I've seen some in H&M recently I think. And am sure I saw some in next. Sorry can't google a link as am at work and supposed to be busy....

I have some lovely thick tights from ASDA, they are called Golden something or other.

I've got a wine colour and a chocolate brown pair, they are very soft and comfortable and were only £6 a pair. Bonus.

CharlieMouseWillDoIt · 29/11/2012 16:44

Thanks ceeveebee - I'll take a look. Now, back to work with you Smile

gail734 · 29/11/2012 16:47

Ok, thanks ceevee, for actually turning that into a link! And thanks for your suggestions so far, everyone. Wasn't really thinking about dresses/skirts, but I can see how it would work. Will also work on sourcing decent tights and jeggings. This could lead to a whole new look!

I always love navy worn with brown boots. A navy knee-length dress, chunky navy tight and your boots would look good.

AlwaysWantingMore · 29/11/2012 18:19

I am the same measurements as you and barely ever take off my flat knee length brown boots! The ones you have are lovely.

I would recommend M & S jeggings in navy which look good with almost every colour/style of top and are very flattering and comfortable. Also 'thermal lined' tights are good, they are kind of furry on the inside and keep you toasty if you have a light/summery dress on top (with vest and cardi!)

Embrace skinny jeans, you will never look back Smile
