Will this fit the bill. Dull but seasonal?

Actually Herbs we were having exactly the same convo yesterday at work! Now where I am there probably are valid reasons, but like you, the only time I recall school closing was when we ran out of oil (strikes in the 70s) and heating breaking. Snow was NEVER a bar to going....

oldqueencrepey · 18/01/2013 12:40

hi there. Another crepey watching the blizzard from the safety of my living room...
re the batmitvah dress code, is there nothing on the invitation? Otherwise venue might be a guide. My ds2 has been the barmitzvah king this year, averaging around 2 a month. Most invites gave a clue to expected level of formality, otherwise would suggest the venue might be your guide (ds didn't wear the same to the Dorchester as to the Holiday Inn!)... failing that ask?

I feel I should go and have a quick panic buy. We're having friends for lunch on Sunday, and if we get snowed in it could end up being tinned ham and gherkins, of whatever the Costcutter has left.

However, I doubt any 'snowing in' will occur, what with living in the great metropolis. And having a Tesco Express at the end of the road. Though I suppose the delivery lorries could have difficulties.

herbaceous · 18/01/2013 12:58

Re BM dress code, DP has asked the hostess. I'm thinking more like a christening than a wedding. I'll need to get DS something smart (quite easy) and persuade him to wear it (quite hard). He's going through a grooming strike. I'm not allowed to comb, wash or cut his hair - it's now a vast fluffy bush, that gets in his eyes. Cute though.

bigTillyMint · 18/01/2013 14:03

The white stuff came! We closed at noon and as I had to walk one of my lovelies home, I left at ten to GrinGrinGrin

DC's school texted this morning saying that they were not shutting, but DC hatched a plan and got DD's bf's mum to tell the office they were allowed to come home, so I am expecting them soon. Have got the sledge out ready and the skiing gear is out in the loft anyway (as they had to try it on so I could see if they needed new for half term)

DH is planning to cycle homeHmm He says there's not much in Bethnal Greeen - is there much your way Herbs?

No idea re dress code - never been to anything like that!

Stropperella · 18/01/2013 14:08

Am smiling at the image of the small person with the fluffy topping. :)

We were all done and dusted on the sledging front by 11.30. It's already looking slushy round here. They have to close the schools round here because transport grinds to a halt. Most of the school buses weren't running and anyway all of the A roads were blocked by jack-knifed lorries by 7.30am. And there was only a very reduced, slow train service. So the pupils from the villages can't get to the senior schools and the teachers can't get there either (some of them live 30 miles away). All the nurseries and pre-schools were also closed. All non-urgent services at the hospital have also been suspended.

Our schools did close because of snow back in ye olden days - for much the same reasons. I had an hour's bus journey to school.

CointreauVersial · 18/01/2013 14:45

I think back in the day, most people went to fairly local schools, and staff were more likely to be local. I can't remember school closing, except for during the strikes in the 1970s when there was no power.

Anyway, I made it to Kingston for a speedy whizz around the shops this morning. The place was deserted, and I copped a bargain pair of skinny jeans in Zara owing to a price-tag error. I then had a phone call from a complete stranger, saying "hello, I'm X's granny, just to let you know I have DD2 safe at home with me" - the blooming school had shut early, but DD2 simply made her own arrangements and bunked off with a mate. The school didn't even phone me.Shock

Am now curled up on the sofa with a frothy coffee watching the snow come down. DH is home, and managed not to demolish the garden wall on the way up the drive, which he did spectacularly in the snow a couple of years ago. Grin

Blackduck · 18/01/2013 15:02

We had a bash at sledging, but it was still snowing and a bit nippy....
It is still snowing 5/6 inches here) but powdery. My evening out tonight was cancelled (norovirus) and I need to decide if I want to fight my way over to old haunt tomorrow or not...I'll see how bad the weather is I think.
Gritters are doing a regular circuit here (our road is kept open as the route over the hill, even if the other roads are left to block up).

MrsSchadenfreude · 18/01/2013 23:44

Snowing here in Paris too. MI and I have just got in from a fab dinner at my favourite restaurant. I think it is now hers as well. Smile

Blackduck · 19/01/2013 08:19

Oh MrsS and MI - waves - have fun!
Ds most annoyed as now they have on-line accounts and were sent homework :)

ruby, we had a labrador when I was a kid and she ate everything - boxes of Quality Street, wrappers and all, boxes of eggs, two bowls of rising bread dough during a power-cut, the entire bottom shelf of my DM's 1960's food trolley (laden with dinner party goodies) and the remains of a birthday cake after one of my parties. Not sure if it was chocolate thoughSmile

MrsS and MIEnvy!

DS is chomping at the bit as his District match has been cancelled, normal training is also cancelled, his Sunday League match tomorrow will be cancelled. He is now crossing everything that he and DH can still go to see the local match which is apparently a "big one" It does seem unlikely....

Blackduck · 19/01/2013 09:53

Labs are just dustbins on legs...dp's parents had one and she would eat anything going...including eating her way through a suitcase to get to the Easter eggs inside.

Hope hound is okay Ruby..

I knew choc was a no no, but didn't realise cake was worse!
Happy Birthday Ruby's dcs ...
Bummer about the holiday...

beachyhead · 19/01/2013 12:06

Dh has a colleague like that, but he books up over a year in advance, so everyone scrambles after Christmas to get sorted out for next Christmas. Ridiculous...

Sorry to hear about your leaky Labrador but hope its sorted soon... Happy birthday to DC's Smile

bigTillyMint · 19/01/2013 12:41

Oh Ruby {{{big hugs}}}

Fingers crossed with holiday date negotiations and that you have a lovely night out tonight.

DH and DS have gone up to help clear the pitch of snowHmm Apparently it is a Very Important MatchGrin

oldqueencrepey · 19/01/2013 15:40

ruby... dogs and chocolate really not a good combination. Have you 'phoned vet for advice? Don't want to be alarmist but friend's dog required inpatient treatment after scoffing quantity of chocolate.

CointreauVersial · 19/01/2013 16:02

Hope the dog recovers from the chocolate binge, Ruby. Bummer about the holiday.

I actually have the house to myself at the moment - DH has taken the DDs sledging on Epsom Downs, and DS is out with friends somewhere (I'm just waiting for the phone call to say that he's cold, and would like to be collected NOW, if not sooner). No football here either.

I will be popping to the library shortly to collect a book I've ordered......50 Shades of Grey!! I'm not expecting to find it a great work of literary genius, but it's become such a cultural reference that I'm interested in what all the fuss is all about. No, really, that's the only reason.Grin

Assuming they don't have any essential exams at the end of term, why not? As far as I remember the DCs didn't do a scrap of work for the last 10 days of term.

My trip to the library was thwarted by the fact that it closed early due to the weather,Angry despite the fact that the roads are totally clear at the moment and no snow forecast at the moment. There were tumbleweeds blowing through the town centre; it was deserted.

Just having a chuckle - spotted an ex-colleague on You've Been Framed, choking on a mouthful of confetti at her wedding. Don't worry, she was fine.Grin

CointreauVersial · 19/01/2013 21:32

Wearing my new Zara skinnies today, and DH actually noticed and said he'd been admiring my back view all day. Wink Wink Wink Grin
