Diamond wedding rings- advice please.

I've just got myself a new wedding ring with small diamonds half way round- like an eternity ring, channel set. The stones are the size of a pinhead and come to just under half a carat.

I don't know how to look after it! So far I have taken it off for washing my hair and going in the bath, and obviously rough work like gardening ( even with gloves on), etc etc.

How should I look after the ring? is it ok to wear it in the bath etc etc- I know gold and diamonds are tough but just wondering.

My wedding ring sounds similar mine is plaltium and I can happily say i have rarely taken it off in 12 years and it is near on perfect.

I have heard that mild soapy water and an old toothbrush cleans diamonds well.

My engagement ring has shoulders like that with a solitaire. I never take it off! Sometimes I take it to a posh jewellers and they give it a wee clean for me for free!

I took mine off all the time to shower, bathe, clean house etc

That was about 3 years ago and dh refuses to buy another set

Lakeland have started doing a fab ultrasonic jewellery cleaner - like what jewellers use. It's amazing. Just don't put pearls in it, they are too soft.

I haven't seen the lakeland version, but not holding high hopes for it I'm afraid- these machines cost a small fortune for a reason

If you take your rings to jewellers that sold you it they should be happy to drop it in for an hour and for you to collect later. No cost. Or at least if they have any level of service at all!

Gold will buff up with scratches after a while - but it softens the look IMO so I wouldn't fret.

I don't remove my engagement ring for anything - every now and then I'll clean it with soap and a nail brush. Those after dinner towels or wipes you get in Indian restaurants are great for buffing up jewellery. It's glittery the most when I've washed my hands and air dried them.

You don't really have to worry about anything that's top of the Moh scale - it's hard. Only if you think they might fall out of the setting... and even if they did, a repair and replacement shouldn't cost loads with diamonds that size.

Is it White or yellow gold? White gold dulls after a while and you should take it back to a jewellers to be professionally cleaned, they will also check for lose stones etc.

Otherwise wear everyday and enjoy. I clean mine with an old soft toothbrush and toothpaste

Without wanting to offend, isn't it up to someone else to buy you a wedding ring, and why would you need a new one? I couldn't bear to change the one I got married with for a new model.

YDraigGoch, my mum upgrades hers every few years when she has the money to do it.

Why stick with a ring that you don't like if you have another option? You don't have the same tastes all of your life.

Been married 28 years- never had the ring I wanted as couldn't find when married, and my tastes have changed anyway now. When I say "i bought" it's our joint money for what that's worth to you.

I'm sorry but I am not that sentimental about a ring- I don't think like that. It's what goes on in my head that matters not whether the ring is the same one I had 28 yrs back.

For sentimental reasons I suppose. I would think I was being really disloyal to DH, who bought me the ring all those years ago. It's not supposed to be a fashion item.

Actually YD I think you are being really obnoxious. I'm dead pleased with this ring and did it with DH's full approval-and it cost a lot of money. so don't spoil it for us by being so rotten.

FWIW my mum has a friend in her 80s who has several wedding rings ( but only 1 husband) and changes them daily to suit her outfits.

Not judgy. Just surprised as its not something I'd ever thought about before. Not aware that anyone I know has ever got a new ring.
Mine is really basic plain gold band. We were both redundant when we got married and couldn't afford much, but I've never even taken it off. Perhaps I'll ask got a new one for Christmas.

I hear what you are saying but TBH after almost 30 years together the ring is a bit of metal . It's nice- and symbolic too- to be able to upgrade it to something I like better and which we couldn't afford all those years back. It's like buying an eternity ring for me- but just having one ring to do both!

This is quite interesting because I have a plain wedding ring and a fabulous but impractical engagement ring . I'm not sentimental but I know my dh spent £1000 of his hard earned money on the engagement ring 15 years ago so I feel mean wanting to sell it . I would like one eternity ring.

You could have the stones made into something else- I looked into that option but the company I went to was very expensive.

Go on bischboshone, get a nice eternity ring.....

(or if you are like me get an eternity ring then get an even sparklier anniversary ring a couple of years later :) )

When DH and I were spending a couple of days in Derbyshire we came across a lady called Helen Burrell who is a silversmith. She has a tiny work shop where she designs and makes all kinds of gold and silver jewellery.

One of the things she does is take your old, unfashionable stuff and turn it into something personal.

I don't want to break any advertising rules or anything, but I was so impressed with this lady. I am sorting out my mother's jewellery and intend to have a ring made with the stones. Lots of people have bits and pieces of inherited jewellery that they do not wear, but it could be made into a "memory piece".

This is an example of re-using earrings to make a ring.

I have taken my rings in to be appraised . Tentatively chosen a beautiful platinum eternity ring . Will see what they come back with . Eek
