Budding perfumistas walk this way- Part 2 of the Worst Perfumes ever

As the first thread is nearly full, I've set up Part 2

OP posts:
BOFingSanta · 21/11/2012 15:04

Hmm, so far the Oud is smelling of men's saunas...

FellatioNelson · 21/11/2012 15:07

Ooh how exciting! I'll try that for DH then. The other one that seems to get really good reviews is the D&G pour homme (think that's what it's called anyway) the 'recipe' of ingredients sounds lovely and it's only about 30 odd quid so worth taking punt on for everyday wear. Doesn't last too well though apparently.

FellatioNelson · 21/11/2012 15:09

Oud is massieve out here in the middle east. Some of them cost a small fortune and are extremely intense and concentrated - proper essential oils really. My son's Qatari friend bought him one (it was about 300 quid ShockShock) and quit honestly it smells like cow pats. I would guess that's what DonAna would call 'animalic' Grin

But blended subtly with other things Oud is divine.

BOFingSanta · 21/11/2012 15:16

Here's the blurb for City Love- when I have a spare wrist, I'll try that next Grin

BOFingSanta · 21/11/2012 15:21

The leather wallet is very nice actually- pale tan, on the female edge of unisex, and lined in black velvet. Thangyewverymuch.

DonaAna · 21/11/2012 15:26

Shoe you have amazing range - there are hundreds of perfumes out there for you. Just the 'powdery' and amber categories are enormous...
You can go to so many directions. The about 100 perfumes listed in Le Snob will cater to the soft spicy /woody /ambery side of you. And classic feminines will also have lots of great ones for you. And vetiver and patchouli and amber are common in most masculines (patchouli is also commonly used as a basenote in feminines these days).

Dueto has intriguing names (Lady Cool, anyone? Wink) and most of my friends have gotten freebies from them, but I haven't tried them. Very happy you are happy, isn't it great to wear something quite unique?

Chamade is fading, I get to pick a new perfume for evening...

coffeeinbed · 21/11/2012 15:27

Aww, I used to wear Chamade.
Went through a whole bottle.
Seems my taste has changed radically.

DonaAna · 21/11/2012 15:31

Fellatio oud is basically rotten wood Grin
You live in a perfume paradise, am Envy

DonaAna · 21/11/2012 15:33

Coffee I go through phases too. Last winter I was all wrapped up in heavy orientals, now I enjoy drier, herbier, quirkier and fizzier perfumes.

shoeprincess2 · 21/11/2012 15:38

My scent and sensibility order arrived- they sent me a freebie Tauer one (Une Rose Vermeille0, in addition to the 4 that I bought. On one wrist I am sporting Pentachord White (excellent recommendation DonaAna). Definitely the non twee violet I was looking for. Quite fruity at the moment; will see how it dries down. On the other wrist, L'air du Desert Morocain- very incensey and spicy- definitely very sexy and confidence boosting (which is just the ticket when you have a new baby and are feeling a bit meh). At first, it was quite a punch in the face and I was worried that it was a bit too much. However, it is settling beautifully on the skin. Tomorrow, I shall be testing Loretta and Incense Rose...

I wanted to try Zeta, the linden one.

BOFingSanta · 21/11/2012 15:46

The names are shit, DonaAna, let's not be coy Grin. But the Golden Boy is really gorgeous, and identical to Tuscan Leather so far. Maybe something else in it, a bit of fruit, perhaps? They didn't send me a Lady Cool sample, which is a shame. God knows who is behind their branding team, because they sound like they have overdosed on eighties teen magazines...still, the smell, the smell! That's what counts.

DonaAna · 21/11/2012 16:33

Ooh I'm glad Shoe. I really enjoy all of the perfumes you mentioned. They are very unique, and now you understand how a small sample of L'Air can last forever. (I gave DH a full bottle and get to enjoy it often on him. I don't get tired of it, it's multifaceted and always a bit different. Tauer bottles are the most beautiful things ever - heavy artisanal glass pentagons with wooden caps.) Use a light finger on Loretta (or you'll die) and also let me hear what you think about Une Rose Vermeille!

I have a sample of Zeta. It has very gorgeous rare Bulgarian linden extract, but to me it is also a strong sandalwood and not as easy to like as many other Tauers (certain sandalwoods are too newborn poo on me).

Yes, BOF, the names are really silly... But who cares, and you can always rename them. And how lovely of them to include the wallet.

I'm breaking some boundaries and wearing Alien Essence Absolue (freebie from somewhere): the strangest sample vial I've ever seen, splashed a lot on my wrist by accident. If you don't hear me, I've OD'd and died Confused

Opening note less scary than I thought: slightly plasticky amber laced with jasmine. Promising but unsatisfying. Will something happen? Is this it?

shoeprincess2 · 21/11/2012 16:41

DonaAna- I am sniffing the Pentachords White and there is something in there that reminds me of some other perfume that I had many years ago. I've been scratching my head and it has just come to me- Escentric Molecules 01. I owned a bottle of it about 6 years ago. Is it the iris in there, or something else? I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that is what it reminds me of. Still enjoying L'Air...very generous sample sizes at Scent & Sensibilty. Yes, it will last me an age, and will be very handy for the handbag. Hopefully, you'll make sense of my post (unless you are slumped in a corner surrounded by a haze of Alien fumes!)

ThatsNice · 21/11/2012 16:52

I'm enjoying dahlia noir by givenchy today. Very light and lovely. Doesn't have great staying power though but that's ok as I'll get to choose something else to wear this evening when I go out... Just need to choose something else now, lol! Smile

DonaAna · 21/11/2012 16:58

I'm pretty near death... Confused Alien is a scary toxic gourmand. I very rarely get headache or nausea from anything but this vile juice is inducing a hyperglycemic shock. Not my thing. Our nanny has accidentally bought perfumed toilet paper, it smells a bit similar.

Molecule 01 is pure Iso E Super. I can't remember whether Pentachord White has that (Tauer pentachords are excercises in minimalism, as they are made from just five ingredients - violet: ionones/irones are prominent in White). I think Andy Tauer loves ambroxan though and rounds up most of his perfumes with it, and iirc Molecule 02 is pure ambroxan (also Not a Perfume by Juliet Has a Gun).

If you are interested in developing you already very goodx nose, an in-depth analysis of Pentachords here.

shoeprincess2 · 21/11/2012 17:06

Thanks for the link. Just quickly skimmed (will read in detail in a bit)- think the other pentachords require sampling too.

OP posts:
DonaAna · 21/11/2012 17:43

White is my favorite of them - Verdant is interesting for anyone who loves greens.

Had to scrub of Alien. Ugh. Covered it with something that I like unconditionally: Shem-el-Nessim by Grossmith.

CointreauVersial · 22/11/2012 00:03

You norty people, you've made me buy more samples.

Dueto sample pack is on its way, thanks to BOF's tempting descriptions. And what a bargain.

I'm now waiting on three deliveries. Blush

kiwigirl42 · 22/11/2012 08:23

you can buy Iso E super on ebay as a decant for really cheap! lol. I may get some as a perfume base. I didn't like Alien either

DonaAna · 22/11/2012 09:37

Today back to wearing No. 19. Ah, a perfect fit. And at each wear, I perceive it slightly differently or find a new phase, facet, stage, byway. This is why I like complex perfumes that take you on a journey.

I have days and weeks when I feel that I don't explore any new perfumes as I already have so many that feel perfect.

And then I get restless and curious about new releases or old classics that I don't know yet Grin What has happened though is that I don't find time any more to repeat wear perfumes that I find average and okay. There are too many really great five star perfumes out there...

I love matching perfumes to my mood / the season and weather / the feel of the day. Selecting what perfume to wear each morning is a ritual I enjoy every morning.

shoeprincess2 · 22/11/2012 10:01

"Loretta is a young woman who works as a maid at a motel. She is shy and withdrawn, but creates her own life in a fantasy world where she danced and falls in love with a man. She is sensual, sexy and seductive, but she has a secretive dark side"
A description of this morning's perfume, in case you thought I should have posted this in chat or AIBU Smile. Loretta is starting off quite fruity but spicy, quite plummy i think. It is reminding a little of JPG's Classique (in a good way). I am liking this so far, but it's only been on for 30 minutes. I am keen to see how it develops during the day.

kiwigirl42 · 22/11/2012 10:30

I'm wearing Jo Malone Rosewater and Vanilla Cologne (sample from ebay). Its not anything like I expected - it has quite a strong oud/ incensey vibe and smells really medicinal when first applied, almost like Dettol, which is not unattractive.

I really wasn't sure when I tried it a few days ago, I think because it was such a shock, but I'm really liking it today

proteins · 22/11/2012 10:35

coffeeInBed

I have a sample of Tauer's Zeta from Les Scenteurs. It's very fresh, green and rather sour/sharp. Good luck with it!

DonaAna · 22/11/2012 10:37

Shoe there is a Loretta short film by Brian Pera somewhere on the Internet. I haven't seen it, but that film was the brief that was given to Andy Tauer to create this perfume.

Not having seen the film, my perception of Loretta is much less romantic. To me, it is a dense jungle of tangled kudzu, carnivorous plants and strange purple fruits. And at the same time, an homage to big shoulder pads and 1980s perfumes (Poison, anyone?). This perfume is strange, dangerous, unique and has really stolen my heart.

I just received a decant of Seville a l'Aube from a very kind Crystal Flaconer. Not quite as romantic as buying a full bottle, but makes much more sense. Am really looking forward to wearing it later.
