Do nice tattoos exist?

ZombieSplodger · 30/10/2012 20:58

I'd quite like to get a tattoo but am quite concerned that it could just look shit.

Are there any rules about getting a tattoo so it looks nice, maybe pretty, and minimises the risk of you regretting it?

The streets are awash with lousy haircuts and some really hideous shoes too... so do you hate haircuts and shoes? Or do you only do massive generalisations on specific image-based decisions?

rainbow2000 · 02/11/2012 10:55

I love mine all 12 of them but of course i do have 1 or 2 crappy ones but at least they are in a place that i can hide them.
Think carefully bout it cause they are cheap{ish} to get but expensive to get rid of.

WorraLiberty · 02/11/2012 10:56

ginhag your analogies work in RL but not in the context of this thread.

The OP is asking if nice tattoos exist and she's getting honest answers.

mignonette · 02/11/2012 11:01

No I reserve my generalisations specifically for PP's, ginhag.....I save it all up 'specially...Grin.

ginhag · 02/11/2012 11:02

Yeah worra I get that. My post was in reply to those questioning why someone with tattoo/s would feel people dissing them were being 'judgy.'

In reply to the OP (which I realised I haven't done yet!) yes, nice tattoos exist. So do some truly awful ones.

mignonette · 02/11/2012 11:02

Yep and we can always take off our hideous shoes unless yours are welded to your feet, Gin

ginhag · 02/11/2012 11:04

mignonette Grin

ginhag · 02/11/2012 11:06

Yeah but I can see your hideous shoes when you are strolling down the street...you can't see my tattoo :)

mignonette · 02/11/2012 11:07

Good off point though. Think I'll have to say 'touche' gin Grin

JammySplodger · 02/11/2012 11:30

Hello, thank you ginhag and everyone else who's replied, I've also seen some truly awful tattoos but am now convinced nice ones do exist and will do some proper thinking about getting one and plan what, where, how visible it would be and how it would look when I'm 70+.

Still reckon a nice, timeless rather than fashionable flower would be nice. Thankfully I'm at least five years behind fashion so that should work in my favour - if there's something I like that's still popular it'll hopefully not look too dated in years to come.

GockandJuice · 02/11/2012 11:31

You would all hate me then! I have a full sleeve, a large one on my stomach, two on my legs as well that are big. All have meaning. I literally couldn't give a s*it whether someone thought my tattoos were hideious. Each one is linked to my family or things I've overcome, not a fan of getting a purdy butterfly n crap and being this tattooed has made me money from modelling so I'm a happy lady! Do I care what they look like when I'm older? Not really. I'll look old anyway so my faded tattoos will be the last thing I give a crap about.

I always find peoples attitudes towards tattoos interesting and the worst sort are usually the people who say "they all look shit" if an artist had drawn the same thing on paper with that much intricate shading and colour it wouldn't be the same, it's the fact it's on someone's skin and that's shallow. I don't care whether someone has no tattoos or a while body suit to be honest. A bad tattoo to me is patchy colour work, dodgy lines etc. I hate my little pony but I did see an amazing piece on someones foot which was so bright and detailed, still not something I'd get though.

Another one I get is "men don't like tattoos on women" I actually have more reaction than ever from men since being heavily tattooed. ;-)

rainbow2000 · 02/11/2012 11:34

Im the same men cant believe ive that many but i love mine ususally

JammySplodger · 02/11/2012 11:36

And yes please quirrelquarrel I'd love to see what you're getting!

connorandmaddiesmom · 02/11/2012 11:39

omg u i have just read your message and was horrified ,i know what it is like to go through domestic violence and i know what impact it has on the children,my son was only young when my partner beat me and i thought he didnt know anything about it ,it has now come to light that my son heard everything and it breaks my heart to know that he had heard it all,so think about the chilren and yourself ,if he wants to kill himself that is entirely up to him he is a grown adult,i hope u have sorted things out now and got as far away from this person as you can because if he has done it once he is likely to do it again .all the best.

connorandmaddiesmom · 02/11/2012 11:43

i have a few and they are expensive to get rid of and painful so i have heard .

JammySplodger · 02/11/2012 11:48

I'm guessing that was meant for someone else connorandmaddiesmom, hope they get it sorted, and big un-mn hug to you & your son.

Blue81 · 02/11/2012 11:49

There are good ones and bad ones. I have two and really really regret the one on my foot as it was done abroad (very bad move, the sun wrecks them) and it isn't how I imagined it would look.

I can't afford to get it fixed plus it covers most of the right side of my foot so would be shockingly painful to laser.

Yes tattoos can look nice, just make sure you get the design fixed in your mind, get a good tattoo artist to draw it on paper then the outline on chosen body part to check it is in the right position and looks how you want it, and then only then, go for it.

PlaySchool · 02/11/2012 12:27

No. Common. Yeuch.

ILovePonyo · 02/11/2012 12:33

What area are you in Jammy? I may be able to link to some good places if I know of any near you.

I have one arm nearly covered, feet, hips and more, I've never really encountered any negative attention. Theres a saying that goes something like " The only difference between tattooed people and non-tattooed people is that tattooed people don?t give a shit that you don?t have tattoos!?" Grin

JammySplodger · 02/11/2012 12:34

Nice saying :) I'm in Sheffield.

ILovePonyo · 02/11/2012 12:44

Give me a little while and I'll get back to you (dd has just woken up!) Smile

granma47 · 02/11/2012 13:29

What will all these tattoos look like on wrinkly skin in 20/30/40 years time?

IWipeArses · 02/11/2012 14:38

Like decorated wrinkly skin?

IWipeArses · 02/11/2012 14:50

Cool as fuck.

littlemissstan · 02/11/2012 14:50

Hmm - I love all mine, they mean something - two linked to places I have lived abroad, one to my grandfather and the other to DP. I would say though to carefully research the artist and get some recommendations - my largest one, which is beautiful and very girly, lots of leaves and flowers, was done over the top of something smaller I had when I was at school. The tattooist, who is amazing, told me the older tattoo had been done so badly I had proper scarring (apart from the colour, obviously). He also genuinely cares about his work - he has since done touch-ups for free on both me and DP so that it looks the best it can.
