Do nice tattoos exist?

ZombieSplodger · 30/10/2012 20:58

I'd quite like to get a tattoo but am quite concerned that it could just look shit.

Are there any rules about getting a tattoo so it looks nice, maybe pretty, and minimises the risk of you regretting it?

peedoffbird · 01/11/2012 17:33

No - they're all awful.

ShiverMeWhiskers · 01/11/2012 20:04

I have three tattoos that I love and if I had the opportunity I would have more! They are addictive!

A friend in the States, who is a tattoo artist, writes a great blog ( sarky but very funny) and posted about things to avoid doing........

The Inklings of Life

What a lot of mahoosive judgeypants on this thread.

But then I am obviously common as fuck and lacking in class. And possibly a man.

Catniss · 01/11/2012 20:16

Ginhag good on ya.

I am COVERED, head to toe, it makes me no less a mother/wife/person/woman/friend/confident.

Some of my tatts have been done to take the onus off other physical attributes, and other because they are meaningful/gorgeous.

I love my tattoos and I don't give a shit what other people think and I CANNOT wait for the one next week and the 6 others I have in design.

TiggyD · 01/11/2012 20:18

They can be nice if:
The memory of the reason you're getting the tattoo will last as long as the tattoo will.
If the tattoo will still be fashionable when you're 80.
If its spelt wright.
If they don't fade.

ThatVikRinA22 · 01/11/2012 20:51

i love some of those on the pinterest site....mine is a little less 'fine' than i wanted and if i were to ever get another i would research more. still like mine though.
really love those on pinterest....going to bookmark

whereismytoenail · 01/11/2012 21:49

i have 15 tattoos and counting .......

im busy having a half sleeve done im 4 hours into it and have about 3 hours left to go

my DH has no tatts but likes mine and has paid for the last 4 tatts ive had done

i regret 2 of them and will be having them coverd,i find tattoos a pleasurable pain ( maybe im just weird ha ha ) but these are off years ago

i used to walk into a studio and pick something out of a book just coz i felt like a tattoo

now im in my 30s my tattoos have to have a personal meaning to me , or i think about it for months

i have a new tattoist that will draw anything u want, she is a fantastic artist,

if u really want one go for it ! you only live once

my mum doesnt like my tatts but in the next breath says if she was younger she would get one...........

GracefromGod · 01/11/2012 22:57

I love mine they represent memories. BUT you have to think hard about it. Don't go stupid with shoulder tattoos etc think about being 70 and if you want them displayed then?!. Mine are for me x

Themilkybarisonme · 01/11/2012 23:09

No.

whats4teamum · 01/11/2012 23:09

Many many years ago I had a friend who had a tattoo of a cartoon character having a wank. Why would you do it? No longer friends.

Cahoots · 01/11/2012 23:17

This is a nice tattoo not keen on any others for myself but if you want one, have one Smile

EmmaNemms · 01/11/2012 23:49

My DH has a few, which I like. I am a tattoo virgin but am thinking of having one as a belated wedding present from him. A little red breasted bird (that he's named after) on my rear end, so that only he and eventually care staff will be able to see it.

apostropheuse · 02/11/2012 00:10

I hate tattoos. Just that really.

monsterchild · 02/11/2012 00:26

I have two and I designed the both. One is hidden in plain sight and the other is well hidden. I like them. But I also realized that people get judgy about them, so most people don't know I have them.

Will they look good when i'm 90? Maybe!

enabledebra · 02/11/2012 00:46

I think there's no point asking for opinions - it's so personal. I'd only warn that you ensure you don't take account of what you think others might think or whether it looks 'right'. It's whether it 'feels' right that counts. Also, you don't spend the rest of your life reviewing how they look if they 'feel' right- they become a part of you like a birthmark. Just make sure you love it and it feels like 'you'.

GeorgianMumto5 · 02/11/2012 01:21

Have a search on facebook for a group that, I think, is called 'Harry Potter Tattoos'. They are not nice to look at, but do veer between 'shocking' and 'amusing'. I only know about I because some people I know post there and their posts pop up on my sidebar. It's like the Daily Mail sidebar: you know you shouldn't look, but you do anyway. I find it a strange nether world of double weirdness.

So, none like that and maybe you'll be OK.

MrsGrieves · 02/11/2012 01:56

My Dp has loads of tattoo's, my favourite one is a giger piece across his chest, it really is nice. Tbh I don't even see them now, although he has both arms done, one on his back and some down his leg.

I have always wanted a tattoo, but I can never decide what to actually get, so I haven't bothered yet. I wanted to get a tattoo to symbolise my Mum, she had a tarot deck that she loved and I would like an image from that, but I still can't decide. I would also like some Peacock feathers to symbolise my children, but haven't found a design I like.

quirrelquarrel · 02/11/2012 08:05

Christ, people have been tattooed since the beginning of time, are the Royal Family not too nice then?

Mine will be nice Grin I am getting it today or next week, and if people are interested I'll put a photo up so you can see that not all tats are disgusting/"heinous"/ridiculous.....

Agreed, wholelottarosie.... If you say they look awful, you judge yet tat wearers happy to judge the dislikers as 'judgy' and 'uptight'....

Well, to clarify, I feel the difference is along these lines...

'gin would you ever get your ears pierced?'
'No, other person asking me a question, I wouldn't. Because I don't really like earrings and I just don't fancy it really.'

VS

'gin would you ever get your ears pierced?'
'No because it is vile and awful and common and tacky and EVERYONE does it and WHY WOULD YOU MAKE A HOLE IN YOUR BODY???!!!'

I have nothing against people not liking tattoos. There is no reason why we should all like the same stuff. It's when some posters express actual disgust that I think it's a bit much and yes, a tad judgy.

I don't like all tattoos. I only have one myself which I've had for years and is rarely seen. I just don't get why some posters feel the need to practically vomit at the mere idea.

mignonette · 02/11/2012 10:35

Because the streets are full of truly appalling tats, that's why?
