Do nice tattoos exist?

I'd quite like to get a tattoo but am quite concerned that it could just look shit.

Are there any rules about getting a tattoo so it looks nice, maybe pretty, and minimises the risk of you regretting it?

I think they are OK especially if they have meaning but many do go faded/wrinkled/'felt tippy' when a person gets older. Saying that I think a lot of old people will have them in the future so they won't look so unusual. I had one as a teenager and have never regretted it (almost 20 years ago) but had a traditional sort of simple small design in a place where it can easily be hidden. Two friends who had them at the same time both regretted it and had them covered/removed. Both had quirky/trendy designs that they regretted.

I would have another but have never been able to find a design I am happy with.

"It's the idea of altering the most perfect surface that human skin is"

My skin is far from perfect, it is much improved by ink Grin

Goths Grin Mine too. I used to hate my arms, now they are PURDY

I love this old rock groupie, and old knitter. Reckon they'd have some stories to tell.

This is a favourite picture of mine -

Human skin is perfect, even when it's not perfect Grin

The 1907 lady looks dressed - amazing!

Just not for me...

Pic's up Smile

Might get a little Chagall detail done next. Fish with wings carrying violin on hip?

The lady in her 80s looks like an "old" forty IYSWIM, just because of the white hair, she looks great.

Jammy, I know someone who has Simon Le Bon's signature tattooed on her shoulder. She got him to sign her shoulder after a show and then went and got it done as a tattoo the following day.

JammySplodger · 05/11/2012 12:16

Well I guess that's a bit more socially acceptable than never washing it again.

JammySplodger · 05/11/2012 12:21

I'm going to ask quirrel (as I know many others in your life will also ask), what is it?

I think it looks like a little person sitting down and chilling out, or possibly doing yoga.

Here's a witty tat -

That's sweet, I like that.

JammySplodger · 05/11/2012 16:25

I think I'm going to ask for this to be shifted to Style & Beauty or something, it's obviously not something to rush into and it would be nice to come back here in the future and read some of the useful advice again.

quirrelquarrel · 05/11/2012 17:53

Haha! yogi Grin no no, it's the Kate Bush symbol, which is always hidden on her album covers somewhere.

That made me chuckle Grin

Someone once wanted Kate's signature as a tattoo on their arm, and when she got wind of it she refused to sign anything for her. Just in case the next day she went off Kate. I call that caring for your fans.

OliviaMumsnet · 05/11/2012 18:36

Now in Style & Beauty

JammySplodger · 05/11/2012 21:09

Gotcha quirrel. And thanks Olivia Smile

I have 3 small stars on the inside of my right wrist. They represent my 2 DC and my DH. He has a larger star on the inside of his left forearm so collectively they represent our family of 4. They were thought out, planned and I love them.
