Reading this, I've realised that when other people wear a lot of accessories, I don't find it oes anything but detract from what they are saying/what they are really like iyswim?

I mean, without meaning to offend - it puts me off the conversation. It is such a distraction - it makes me feel instinctively that they are trying too hard to make me think they are something, whatever that something is - pretty, or well off or interesting - but I would rather they didn't try, so I could actually get past their appearance and onto what they are saying or doing.

It seems, well, a bit false? I do wear a scarf when it is cold - but never ever for 'effect' or because someone said I should or no one will notice me...we are t old this sort of thing so much as women, you have to accessorise, ou have to make an effort, use foundation, whatever - and we don't have to.

We're not that shallow that we only like people in necklaces or silky scarves.

SeveredEdMcDunnough · 11/10/2012 19:01

or people who can type properly.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 11/10/2012 19:11

I like clothes with simple lines - especially necklines so will often wear a necklace - usually metal - New Look does some great stuff. I don't do dangly earrings - they're either gold/silver studs or small hoops. If I'm wearing short sleeves or tight cuffs then I will wear a cuff of some type.

I do love a hat in the winter though Grin

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 11/10/2012 19:16

Coco Chanel always took off one piece of jewellery before leaving the house. I think that's a pretty good rule.

ceeveebee · 11/10/2012 19:47

I always wear some kind of necklace/pendant, usually a scarf, usuallly a belt, and have a selection of nice bags depending what I am wearing.
I dress very minimalistic, for work usually a black or grey dress with black tights and never wear any pattern other than stripes, so need something so brighten me up!

Stevie77 · 11/10/2012 21:19

Yes

I wear mainly earrings and necklaces, for some reason bracelets haven't succeeded with me much. I have all sorts of stuff; expensive golds & diamonds, cheap supermarket stuff (there's something I like @ Sainsbos at the moment), plastic, shell etc etc. Etsy is brilliant for original accessories and as much as I'd like to show off my good taste I'm never linking it here because you lot will all be wearing it

I love scarves, get them mainly from TK Maxx

hugoagogo · 11/10/2012 21:28

I can't accessorise for shit

whiteandyelloworchid · 11/10/2012 21:47

perhaps wearing less patterned clothes would help.

Never heard of Alex Monroe jewellery before and just looked at the website...oh my gosh...so beautiful!

Dollydowser · 11/10/2012 22:19

'Thanks in advance hopefully. I think I may be a one big accessory girl. I was watching the Lovely Kirsty tonight on Location, she had one big ring on, I like that look.

CointreauVersial · 11/10/2012 23:33

I would say I'm an "accessoriser".....

I love scarves, and have a whole chest of drawers full. I tend to use them to pull together an outfit (e.g. teal jeans and a grey jacket, with a teal and grey scarf, perhaps with a flash of hot pink....).

I also have a lot of costume jewellery and inexpensive silver pieces (long pendants, beaded bracelets, rings etc) that I select by colour to coordinate with what I'm wearing, as with scarves. Today, for example, at work I was wearing a grey shift dress with a long purple cardi - accessorised with a long purple beaded necklace and a silver and purple bangle. I do have plain and "expensive" pieces of jewellery, but wear them less often.

I'm not necessarily "matchy matchy" but I do think the right accessories finish an outfit. And I'm not a big wearer of print, so the scarves and necklaces are for me the main outlet for colour and interest.

I am however rubbish at belts, not having much of a waist. I wear them very occasionally, but they always feel wrong.

SorrelForbes · 11/10/2012 23:43

I try but am hampered by the fact that all none gold/silver/platinum jewellery gives me a rash. I probably accessorise more with bags and belts than with jewellery.

ellangirl · 12/10/2012 08:24

I love my silver bangles and watch, but rarely wear necklaces and only stud earrings. Pretty much always wear a scarf, feel so bare without one! Have skin discolouration on my chest so it's nice for me to be able to cover it too. Haven't quite worked out belts, other than to hold jeans up! It's always a bit close to the sack of spuds look round my middle for my liking, and I don't even have a big waist (being 9 months pregnant aside!). Bags normally only a change bag or practical over body satchel job so I can run round after DS.

Dollydowser · 12/10/2012 20:22

I have been inspired to peruse hundreds of pages on Ebay for my dream one off accessories, now have lots in my watching!

Scarf and belt addict - hands up! Usually wear one of 5 pairs of earrings, all silver and pretty dull. Same silver bracelet every day. Not a big necklace wearer (due to scarf)

Meggles76 · 13/10/2012 06:00

Ah I love a good accessory but never do lots of things all at once.

I like scarves. They add interest to jeans and tops. I feel the cold so they also serve a purpose.

I have various earrings. I have one of my ears pierced 3 times from my teenage years and tend to wear gold studs. I then like to mismatch the other ear with a more dangly earring or with 2mm ear stretcher type things. Not for everyone but works for me and my style.

I wear a number of leather and silver bracelets on my wrist most days. Cheap leather friendship types that I have got on holidays that have sentimental value. Also some pandora charm ones. And Lola rose ones too.

I have a couple of watches but don't wear everyday. I also have a couple of necklaces I might wear if not wearing a scarf.

Turquoiseblue · 13/10/2012 07:24

I do accessorice but I m quite particular about choosing my accessories. I always have a handbag with me - that s a necessity not an accessory- have a good selection of them as I like to rotate them depending on my mood and outfit and the occasion.
I have a really beautiful antique pendant dh gave me - it s diamonds on platinum it s very pretty and I wear it most days - it s often noticed an complimented I love it.. I have a few other necklaces that I ve gotten for various occasions or special outfit s but mostly I wear the pendant.
I have about 6 pairs of earrings I have accumulated though they years - they are mostly semi precious and precious stones, I chose them for occasions (ie after ds was born, my sisters wedding etc) some were expensive some not so much they are all a little different. When I wear them they mean something to me as they are linked to the occasion I got them for iyswim - i don't wear them daily though. I would have spent a few weeks / months choosing them so they re carefully considered.
I love bangers and arm candy - eventhough I find them a bit faffy these I do wear a good bit too.

TellMeLater · 13/10/2012 07:44

I accessorise but usually only one piece. I'm a minimalist at heart. I think accessorises add interest as long as you know when to stop. Coco Chanel's advice is great for those who tend to over accessorise but at the other end of the scale are the few of us that could do with a little more embellishment to move away from looking plain and dull.

Turquoiseblue · 13/10/2012 08:05

Ha ha :-) love bangers and bangels tooSmile even

Turquoiseblue · 13/10/2012 08:06

I always wondered if coco ended up putting on a bit extra to have a bit to take off actually Wink
