I tried to do one this morning and it looks like I've got a dead rodent glued to the back of my head.

Well Ican do them but have no idea how to describe it to you.

Have you tried the infamous youtube for help?

I have looked for video tutorials and found some and even followed one this morning, but it was a hairdresser doing a woman's hair. Its totally different when you're reaching round and doing it yourself! :(

Gather your hair up into a low ponytail and the base of your neck. then twist it up into a twisty rope going "up" your head

When You get to the top, smoothe one side and tuck it into the twisty rope...

I don't bother with the backcombing or the weirdy pinning at the beginning though.

THAT'S THE ONE I WATCHED! My pleat did not look like that.

I need another hand.

I use slightly damp hair to start and lots and lots of pins/grips. Twist as Shirt says and coil the end under the rope at the top. Takes practice and strong arm muscles.

OK, try

But instead of using a hideous 1970's "barrette" thingy just use the normal pins.
