Searching for the perfect work/evening do dress

As summer is properly over now - I can't put off any longer needing to find an evening do dress for the winter.

I'm looking for the holy grail - a dress that can go from the workplace to a drinks party with the addition of heels and some spangly jewellery. In an ideal world it would have sleeves of some kind, and I really would prefer it not to be black. I'm thinking a sort of dark plum colour, maybe? Oh and I'm the wrong side of 40, so can't be doing with bottom skimming length dresses.

Can anyone help?
