Ok, where is the brilliant 'Warm and waterproof coat' thread from last year? I need another one.

I bought an amazing coat by Didriksons last year on the advice of a MNetter here who worked in the industry. She gave the BEST advice but I can't find the thread now. Basically she explained how warm AND waterproof is a hard combination to come by because we're the only country with such a wet and cold climate and no one designs for us. Nice.

I bought the coat for DS but ended up wearing it myself, now I need to buy him one of his own before he gets soaked to the skin!

I received Barbour parkathe serdar so if anyone wants a review by a 5'4 size 12 housewife let me know! I also tried the Windsor parka and the storm down parka

Housewifefromheaven · 28/09/2012 08:54

The serdar? Yesterday!

xxxresi it looks slightly different and doesn't have the word 'herringbone' but the ikoku is available from sports direct for £89.99. Still not cheap but under £100. I really like it too but after reading another thread (the original one) am going to splash out & get a didrikson to make sure I'm protected from the rain & hopefully it will last a lifetime ikoku

for those looking sub ££££ how about the icepeak jenna. They are a snowboard/ski company so their gear should be technically up to the job......

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 28/09/2012 10:18

I noticed that Tesco are doing a longish parka for £35 - no idea how warm though.

AgathaFusty · 28/09/2012 10:24

Alibaba I've seen it in store. It doesn't look that thick/warm, and at best I would say it would be showerproof, not waterproof. Assuming it is the same one that you have seen Grin

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 28/09/2012 10:40

Agatha I've only seen adverts/posters for it - not actually in the flesh! Just wondered if it might be a cheaper option.

Are Blacks outdoor shops still going? I had a nice, really warm parka from them about 5 years ago which was only £30-40. It didn't look outdoorsy/sporty or anything and I would still be wearing it except that I have lost weight and it is now too big.

Merrell Havens reduced on this site ladies, down to about £87 or so Smile

I have the craghoppers haddenbury from last year for my outdoor job and travel in the dark and found it completely waterproof and very very warm. Available cheaply for this winter but not hugely stylish I will admit! The Nariko has a little more shape but no idea if it is as warm. I've actually been really impressed with this parka from Oasis. It let in water on the shoulders after 30mins in truely driving rain but I have Nikwaxed it now so will see how it goes. It is a neat flattering fit but the sizing is teeny.

dancingqueen78 · 28/09/2012 11:33

Cocochops, assuming that the Lindsey is as similar to the Celeste as it looks then you definitely want to go a size down. I'm a size 12-14 and ordered the 12 and ended up swapping it for a 10! Luckily they still had one in stock and they didn't charge me for the exchange.

xxxresixxx · 28/09/2012 12:07

Thank you so much accessories! Have just bought the ikoku from your link. I'm a12 on the bottom and a14 on top bunny I checked the size guide and the chest on a14 seemed ambitious with winter clothes so I went for the 16. Hope it was the right decision!

Cocochops · 28/09/2012 12:13

Thanks dancing queen. Dithering over I have bought and sized down. Mumsnet is an expensive past time!

accessorieshelp · 28/09/2012 12:13

ooh let me know what it's like, fit, finish & waterproofness/warmth (still not 100% decided!)

I wear good quality motorcycle coats which are designed to be very warm and 100% waterproof, normally 10 times the quality of fancy brand names but half the price.

CaroleService · 28/09/2012 14:19

They wouldn't let me pay in dollars, as soon as I put in delivery country.

DairyNips · 28/09/2012 16:44

Wow, do people really spend hundreds of pounds on coats? I can't afford any of these Sad Does anyone have any budget options that are waterproof and warm? My last winter coat came from Asda, not that warm and not waterproof Hmm

PigWhisperer · 28/09/2012 16:53

pmTea - Thank you! I managed to get a Haven today. Fingers crossed it will fit! Smile

BrianButterfield · 28/09/2012 17:09

I have had cheap coats for my entire adult life - my Haven is my first ever £100 (well, £99!) coat and it is so worth it! Hopefully it will last for years as it seems very well made. I have HAD IT with being cold and wet.

accessorieshelp · 28/09/2012 17:10

no DairyNips, the last coat I bought was £30 last winter and it was meant to be waterproof but each time I wear it I get soaked. I am (thinking of) buying one for £170 which is so much more than I have ever spent on anything a coat but DH says I should because I walk quite a lot each day & am hoping this one will last a few years, although it does make me feel sick the thought of spending that much money on a coat.

what's your budget dairynips?
