Ok, where is the brilliant 'Warm and waterproof coat' thread from last year? I need another one.

I bought an amazing coat by Didriksons last year on the advice of a MNetter here who worked in the industry. She gave the BEST advice but I can't find the thread now. Basically she explained how warm AND waterproof is a hard combination to come by because we're the only country with such a wet and cold climate and no one designs for us. Nice.

I bought the coat for DS but ended up wearing it myself, now I need to buy him one of his own before he gets soaked to the skin!

alibaba Fab to hear that you are pleased! Mine has been dispatched so am eagerly awaiting the postman tomorrow Smile

accessorieshelp · 27/09/2012 17:21

ok, I am now trying to decide between these 3:-

Insulated Wakefield in Heather

Craghoppers Ikoku in Khaki

Didrikson Taylor in Black

What to do, I really can't decide

monopod · 27/09/2012 17:38

Just to add another one to the mix, I'm coveting the Marmot Chelsea at the moment (but can't justify £220)! At 5' and usually a size 4-6 (currently nearly 36 weeks pregnant though!) virtually all of the other brands named on this thread are too big for me even in the smallest size Sad

howiwonder · 27/09/2012 19:52

Oh I had an hour to myself this afternoon and it became completely swallowed up by this thread!! I quite like the look of this do you reckon it is properly warm though? Im on a budget because I have promised myself some new winter boots you see and cant justify spending lots on both!

messagetoyourudy · 27/09/2012 20:01

cakeoholic thanks very much for your link, that is just the colour I like, unfortunatley the factor website is not accepting orders at this time! It's site has technical difficulties Sad

So back to the drawing board - pah.

I'm hankering after what I can't have.........

dancingqueen78 · 27/09/2012 20:03

I got Didriksons Celeste last year and it really is both warm and waterproof. I was a bit doubtful at first as the padding seems light, but it was warm enough even when it snowed, and I was still wearing it through much of the spring when it was pouring buckets here (minus the fur edging which I took off). I bought it from www.vikingkids.co.uk as I'd got children's coats from there before and was really impressed with them. DS has worn his for 3 winters and needs a new one - I do like the look of the "Jarvis" parka, anyone tried this yet?

dancingqueen78 · 27/09/2012 20:15

messagetoyourudy Try this - www.vikingkids.co.uk/didriksons/AW12-Lindsey-ladies-parka.htm - it's this year's version of last year's Celeste (which I got after reading reviews on here and it's been brilliant). They also have some other ones this year which look good - I like the look of both the Veronica and the Naomi... DH would kill me if I bought another coat though!

AgathaFusty · 27/09/2012 21:04

Is the Lindsey a bit less shiny than the Celeste?

AgathaFusty · 27/09/2012 21:05

I really like the idea of the Celest, but it takes me right back to being fifteen again - blue parka with orange lining.

Tiddlyompompom · 27/09/2012 21:43

Agatha I emailed VikingKids about that and they said the Lindsey isn't actually shiny when you see it in person, def not shiny like the Celeste. HTH! :)

AWimbaWay · 27/09/2012 21:53

I like the look of this oddmolly parka, do you think it'd be waterproof enough? They don't say waterproof which makes me think not. I like this one too

I'm really not sure about any of the properly waterproof coats I've seen, they all look a bit stiff. I'm going to have to compromise somewhere.

AgathaFusty · 27/09/2012 22:08

Tiddly thanks that helps a lot. The lindsey it will be then............... I think.....

sandy1969 · 27/09/2012 22:24

I have the Merrell Haven, it is a great coat, warm and waterproof perfect for school run. But I find Merrell sizes dont suit me too well and the coat is quite large on me so less stylish than it would otherwise have been. I am usually a 12 but ended up with a large as the medium was a little too tight with jumper etc. Still I am warm and very happy in it. I am 5 foot 8.5 and the Wakefield was too short for me sadly. It looked daft with a high waist.

Cocochops · 27/09/2012 22:24

I too have been sucked in by this thread! I think I want a Didrikson pretty sure I am going to get the green Lindsey. Dh is despairing of my inability to make a decision I have been looking all evening and still haven't ordered!

I can't decide what size to order though it says the coat is reasonably true but you may want to go on the small side. Anyone have one? Did you size down?

ToastedTeacakes · 27/09/2012 22:26

I'm left wondering if it is impossible to locate quality coats for under £200 anymore. It's depressing.

amazonianwoman · 27/09/2012 22:52

I have the Merrell Wakefield and I love it! I also have the insulated Wakefield and I love that too but I don't need a warm coat (the uninsulated is warm enough for me).

Would anyone like my insulated one?! Grin

It's black, size 16 or XL. I only wore it around 15-20 times last winter.

serin · 27/09/2012 22:55

Landsend black squall jacket.

Waterproof, over the bum, fitted style, big hood.

Perfect for dog walking

Bought on the advice of a MN last year.

pixiepoopoo · 27/09/2012 23:15

Merrell Wakefield for long days and Merrell Haven for shorter. Can't be beaten.

cakeoholic · 28/09/2012 00:07

messagetoyourudy the site I posted earlier was an auction one which ended at 3pm, sorry

Tiddlyompompom · 28/09/2012 00:48

I've ordered the Didriksons Rebecca, fingers crossed it turns out to be worth the price tag!

largerleon · 28/09/2012 00:55

I've just ordered a Lands End Stadium Squall Parka in Tall as they're reduced from £120 to £60 and I couldn't resist it. About 3 or 4 people on here have recommended them, although I think they're only water resistant rather than waterproof... As I'm buggy-free 3 days out of 5 on the school run I can try out my recently purchased but not yet used Fulton Birdcage umbrella in Pink!!
but umbrellas are probably on a whole new thread...
Oh god it won't go with the new Rich Red parka... :-|

LandUnderWave · 28/09/2012 05:59

I bought the merrell Wakefield last year on mn advice and it is brill, very waterproof.only issue is it really isn't that warm, and living in Scotland that's not ideal! Have just ordered www.seasaltcornwall.co.uk/women/clothing/jackets_outerwear/janelle_coat_cormorant.htm after reading this thread, vv excited about it

Gigaflops · 28/09/2012 07:43

Amazonianwoman - have pm'd you... Grin

CuttedUpPear · 28/09/2012 08:22

Gosh! Imagine my surprise when the MN newsletter dropped into my inbox and this thread was featured!
Fame at last! [proud]

(Makes a change from my usual moaning AIBU threads....)

I too am completely depressed by the fact a decent coat seems to cost over a hundred quid. I love the craghoppers ikoku.. However I am going to brave a trip to tk maxx this afternoon to see if I can bag a bargain...
