Ok, where is the brilliant 'Warm and waterproof coat' thread from last year? I need another one.

I bought an amazing coat by Didriksons last year on the advice of a MNetter here who worked in the industry. She gave the BEST advice but I can't find the thread now. Basically she explained how warm AND waterproof is a hard combination to come by because we're the only country with such a wet and cold climate and no one designs for us. Nice.

I bought the coat for DS but ended up wearing it myself, now I need to buy him one of his own before he gets soaked to the skin!

Don't know about waterproofing different coat fabrics, not all the exact same so I'd check the aerosol. Have not noticed any leaking through seams, just that suede footwear stayed dry too.

I'm an 18-20 and need more room for big chest and the 18 fits me fine, they said they were generous when I ordered it, wore it to tesco and was boiling!

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 30/09/2012 14:21

How is the Ellenwood sizing coming up, I am a 14, if I order a 14 will it be OK do you think?

Phaedra11 · 30/09/2012 14:45

Thanks to Pesto for recommending the Lands End Stadium Squall coat in petite, for those of us whose arms are too short for the Merrells. Mine arrived yesterday and once I'd got the knack of the double zip, I loved it!

Lozislovely · 30/09/2012 15:02

Thedoc - I ordered the large (meant to be 14 equivalent) and its a really good fit, room for a jumper underneath but still flattering. It has toggles on the inside of the waist so can be adjusted if needs by.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 30/09/2012 15:03

ah, super, thanks!

notsosqueakyclean · 30/09/2012 17:23

I was on the hunt for a warm and waterproof coat (i'm a dog walker). It had to be good quality and stylish so I can wear it to the pub as well and not look as if I'm about to hike up a mountain. I followed a thread from another Mumsnetter to www.vikingkids.co.uk. and Didrikson's Lyndsey Parka - perfect! Also Emma who owns the company was extremely helpful and gave lots of good advice. It would appear that this coat is cheaper here than elsewhere online too!

accessorieshelp · 30/09/2012 18:23

squeaky how shiny is it? and did you feel that the sizing was generous?

headintheclouds · 30/09/2012 19:09

I've read this thread with interest, because completely co- incidentally I ordered a Janelle coat from Seasalt this afternoon.I saw them on Friday in a local store but they hadnt got my size in stock. They look fantastic and I tried on a size 10 ( 2 sizes too small ,but gave me a good idea of whether I liked it or not!) .
I can't wait for it to arrive because it's done nothing but rain here for days and I'm sick of getting wet.
I have a Boden rain mac from a couple of seasons ago which does keep me very dry,but it's not lined and it's like wearing cold rubber.I went off it when I was told I looked like a Ninja turtle in it ( it's a shiny green pattern)
If anyone's interested in it pm me and I'll gift it to you ! Although I've not bigged it up really have I? Grin

notsosqueakyclean · 30/09/2012 22:55

Funny, I asked Emma that very same question! It's really not shiny at all - the photo makes it look shiny. I got the dark green which is a lovely dark olive green- the photo makes it look quite a bit lighter. I'm normally a size 10 and ordered a 10 but when it arrived I felt it was too generous and I wanted a more fitted look so ordered an 8 (Eur36). Looks much better and I can still get a jumper underneath. Went for a long walk in it today and got rather too hot! Mind you it's not very cold yet here in Sussex, will definitely be glad of it when the colder weather sets in!

accessorieshelp · 01/10/2012 09:34

thanks squeaky. Am tempted to go for it then. Am normally a size 10 but sometimes 8 on top so I'd definitely go for the 8, & I am going to go for dark green, I just don't know whether to go for that or the Taylor here , which I really like the look of and it's more waterproof (an '8' as opposed to a '5'), BUT the fur on the hood doesn't detach.

aaagh what shall I do?

xxxresixxx · 01/10/2012 11:12

Accessories- my ikoku craghoppers coat arrived today and it's fab! Size 16 is the prefect to fit boobs and winter jumper in. It's cosy!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 01/10/2012 11:49

I've just been to Go Outdoors and got a Regatta Clancy for £35.
It is wet, but too warm for the Barbour parka, and my lightweight craghoppers jacket is too short so I get a wet bum.

Hopefully that is me done now on coats for some time!

floozietoozie · 01/10/2012 13:26

Apologies if this has already been covered but I'm looking for a waterproof coat that comes to my knees, so the whole top half of my
leg stays dry. I'm not sure when people
mention bum covering if that's just onto the thigh. I'm 5'8 and 10/12. Any thoughts? Thanks for suggestions in advance.

accessorieshelp · 01/10/2012 14:00

resi have you tried it out in the rain yet?

dancingqueen78 · 01/10/2012 14:40

Accessories, if you like the look of the Lindsey better then I'd say go for that one - my Celeste from last year was only Dry2 but it kept me dry all winter and still is, and I machine washed it several times (lots of muddy walks with a dog that jumps up). I asked VikingKids about it last year, and apparently anything above 1.5 is properly waterproof.

xxxresixxx · 01/10/2012 15:38

No not yet. Had an added annoyance difficulty as the company sent me the coat twice and I think may have charged me twice too (although need to check tonight)

notsosqueakyclean · 01/10/2012 16:35

accessorieshelp; I am so pleased with my Lyndsey - have taken the fur off as it looked a bit too wintry for now. Wore it in the rain today; dry as a bone and the hood is great - very generous so hair doesn't go frizzy! I'm not so keen on the big pockets on the Taylor, although that's my own personal taste. Let me know what you end up doing and if you're pleased!!

AgathaFusty · 01/10/2012 16:41

notsosqueaky - do you think the Lyndsey will be seriously warm when it's really cold? I really can't be so cold again at footie matches this year Grin

notsosqueakyclean · 01/10/2012 17:12

You'd still probably have to wear a thick jumper underneath I reckon when it's REALLY cold. Trouble is I'll be wearing mine for walking (long and hard!) so I may have opposite problem - at the moment I'm too warm in it when I do a fast walk! End up sweating_ it's got a lovely fleece lining over the top of the shoulders inside and the hood's fleece lined too.

AgathaFusty · 01/10/2012 17:19

Thanks for that. I am the queen of indecision!

dancingqueen78 · 01/10/2012 17:39

AgathaFusty, I thought I'd get cold in my Celeste last year too but the fleece lining that Squeaky mentioned really did keep me warm - I generally just wore a thin jumper underneath. Admittedly it wasn't a particularly cold winter last year but we did get some snow - and I'm out with the dog every day, plus on a muddy rugby field on Sunday mornings! Wouldn't be without mine. Love the look of the new Lindsey though, sigh...

accessorieshelp · 01/10/2012 18:43

one more question for the people who have a lindsey (or celeste) - how tall are you and where does it reach (at the front - I know it's longer at the back)
thank you
