I also don't like - at any age past about 7 - that thing where someone has very long hair and swishes it around a lot, like it is their best feature and they are so so proud of it - even though it is just long and not styled to suit them or anything. It's just, that 'I am my hair' type of look/attitude that distresses me. iykwim?

Those are the ones I want to sneak up on with a pair of scissors and funk it up a bit.

Tigresswoods · 19/09/2012 10:24

My aunty is 63 and still rocking shoulder length hair. It's thick & lovely, she's been colouring it for a while.

EdMcDunnough · 19/09/2012 10:25

Good point Startail. If you have short hair you have to maintain it short - so it looks Ok. I haven't been to a hairdresser in 5 years since ds2 was born.

It is such a lot of money and you have to have those conversations and feel like a stupid person. I'd rather mine just looked after itself - I trim the ends sometimes if they get scraggy. The rest of the time it does its own thing.

Absy · 19/09/2012 10:26

My grandmother had waist length hair until she died in her mid 90s, and she looked amazing. She kept it in a bun most of the time (she was a grandmother and great grandmother after all ...) , but when it was "unleashed" it was still mostly a gorgeous chestnut colour and AMAZING Envy

So the answer is - there's no such thing as "too old". It's about looking after your hair and doing what suits you.

There is a woman on the new M&S ad, she must be in her 60s and has beautiful long hair. I think so long as it's in good condition and not so long it looks scraggy then long hair is good forever!

I have curly hair and it occurs to me I have never seen an old lady with natural curls - permed, yes, rollered, yes, but not natural! Hope I don't have to start doing MORE to style it once I am a granny!

Shesparkles · 19/09/2012 10:33

I'm 42 with long blonde hair and dont intend changing it .
I don't think it kattersmwhat age you are, as long as its in good condition and well cut. You still see a lot of older women with long hair that just nags there from a middle parting, and that's not flattering, no matter your age. The same goes for women with long hair and the heavy fringe that just hangs there-and not in a good way.

lubeybooby · 19/09/2012 10:33

I'm 32 with long hair and really hope to keep it.

I did have it shoulder length once though and it was nice (not a bob though a kind of choppy cut)

EdMcDunnough · 19/09/2012 10:34

Theone - I'm sure it is fine, I'm sure you're not that sort of person!

There was a girl at school - she wore the most unfashinable things she could find, was very stroppy about it (and everything else) and was super religious, and pious and everyone disliekd her Sad

Her hair was very very long and very oily and not very nice, really, but she seemed to cling to it like it was important.

I think back and she probably had a hideous life at home, and is probably a much nicer person now, but still - it kind of put me off hair being long for the sake of it.

I just am the sort of person who short hair never looks right on. I wish it di - I love funky short hair. I just look stupid.

EdMcDunnough · 19/09/2012 10:35

Oh and another girl at school had NEVER had it cut - not even a trim - and hers was gorgeous. Always in a plait, though, and it suited her. Very beautiful.

MrsBovary · 19/09/2012 10:37

I'm mid 30s with blonde hair. I used to have very long hair and recently grown long again after having cut to just below shoulder length, though not to original length, it's now mid-way down my back.

I find it much more versatile, and often wear it up, or in large waves (favourite).

MrsBovary · 19/09/2012 10:39

Oops. To answer the question, I don't think there is an age where a person becomes too old for long hair.

BuntCadger · 19/09/2012 10:39

absy your grandmothers hair sounds beautiful

I have waist length hair, I mostly were it in a messy bun but will have it loose too, especially when it's low sun in the autumn. It's a rich red, thick, glossy and wavy. I get comments every time it is down and often when up too.

I spent my childhood hating it, being relentlessly teased and bullied thoughout school. It is still the rich colour ANSI only find a white hair occasionally. It's part of me.

When ds1 (12) was a baby I cut it very short. I had PND at time and thought it would help. Never again.

I'm hoping to be a great grandmother one day with long locks Smile

BuntCadger · 19/09/2012 10:39

Oh and I'm 37

badtasteflump · 19/09/2012 10:44

I think long hair at any age is fine as long as it's in a style and not just hanging there all wispy and split-endy.

I have long hair - about down to my mid-back. But it's very layered and feathery round my face - if it just hung there in two long lumps each side of my face I don't think it would do anything for me, although I probably could have got away with that when I was 20 something...

greenhill · 19/09/2012 10:53

I'm 41 I had waist length hair until recently, now it is past my bra. It is completely natural, thick and in excellent condition. My DB and male cousins have long hair too and they are in their 30's. We have good hair as a family.

Most of the mums around here have waist length hair. It looks gorgeous as long as it is well maintained, glossy and thick.

Thin, rat tails on grey haired men should be got rid of though. It is the condition of the hair, not age, that is important.

Donkeysdontridebicycles · 19/09/2012 11:05

At 22 I thought I'd probably get mine cut around my 30th birthday.

Hurtling towards my half century I still have it between jaw and shoulder, any shorter doesn't really suit me. It's still thick and wilful, I get it cut every 5-6 weeks and if my DD is in a v v good mood she'll straighten it for me, I can never quite manage it myself. As long as it's kept clean and trimmed and doesn't frighten the horses I don't see why I should crop it.

MrsSnow · 19/09/2012 11:06

I'm 36 and have longish hair, looks good, I feel great. When I can't cope with it or it doesn't look good I'll cut.

I do find though that I cut hair short every so often and then spend the next year growing it back.

Corygal · 19/09/2012 11:10

I always ask my hairdresser, citing Liz Jones as the terror. I'm 44 and they won't chop it off, but it is seriously highlighted. And it's thin and straight. But I do get compliments.

Leave in conditioner helps.

TroublesomeEx · 19/09/2012 11:12

I'm 38. My hair is just past bra strap/boob length.

It's never occurred to me to have it cut because of my age Shock

I can't imagine having it 'short'. What am I supposed to do with it?!

Yorkpud · 19/09/2012 11:14

My hair seriously looks awful above my shoulders as it makes my face look really fat if too short!!! I usually keep it around shoulder length but am trying to grow it longer so I don't have to straighten it the whole time.

vjg13 · 19/09/2012 11:58

Mine is layered, past my shoulders and I'm 44. I do have a habit of looking out for older women with good long hair as role models Blush. I think grooming gets more important with each passing year though!

Eliza22 · 19/09/2012 12:06

I'm 50 this weekend. I love long hair and wore mine long until I was 43 or so. But, I've gone progressively shorter and just find that it better suits my face shape now as IT have gotten longer, IYKWIM !

Last year I attempted to grow it. It got to "bob" stage and I just couldn't be faffed with it, anymore but then, short and dead straight as mine is, I don't need to use any appliances on it. It's a bit like the Valentine Wannop hair, in Parades End. I like it. However, if I woke tomorrow morning and had my long straight locks back, I'd enjoy that for a bit to.

It all depends on what you do with it. If you scrape it back into a pony tail or have it hanging limply THAT can be very ageing.

DerbyNottsLeicsNightNanny · 19/09/2012 12:10

I'm nearly 34 with longish blonde hair which is in fairly good condition (although not up to shampoo advert standard!). I cant see I will EVER want to have short hair as I just dont think it would suit me. My hair style hasnt really changed since I was a teenager and I see 40-something women with my style a lot so I think I am OK for a good few years yet. Not sure what I will do if/when it doesnt look right for my age!

(hair is layered a bit especially round front, highlighted, I straighten it - all quite boring I guess but nevermind!)

Poledra · 19/09/2012 12:14

I am 41. I have long (bra-length) hair. I am not, however, a witch - I am a sorceress, thank you very much!
