Help me!! In a nutshell, what should I be wearing this season?

Help am in total fashion oasis. Have realised that I have absolutely no idea what the 'look' is this autumn. Came back from a summer away and now it's positively chilly and all my clothes look wrong wrong wrong. Need some serious help.

Am in early 40's, slim, light brown shoulder length hair, size 10/12 and youthful (so I am told)

This is for day to day, school run etc, would like to look vaguely in the loop not loopy.

Going to watch this for ideas! I'm 40-something with similar hair to you, but not slim though unfortunately!

foofooyeah · 19/09/2012 08:55

Yes somebody with style please respond as I need a serious overhaul.

Jumpers

Ankle boots

There are loads of skinny/slim fit cords around in gorgeous colours like aubergine, oxblood and forest green

Go to the shops or browse your favourite shops' websites for ideas!

Iwannamovenow · 19/09/2012 09:11

I wouldn't describe myself as stylish anymore but today i'm wearing dark slim leg jeans, an oatmeal cashmere short sleeved top with a beige long sleeved tshirt underneath.

With chocolate brown ballet pumps.

Quite a boring outfit but I feel rather nice and Autumnal.

TheBirdsTheBirds · 19/09/2012 11:08

Oh and I forgot to say - something with animals on it! If you want to be really fashionable you should wear a jumper with a hideous ugly horse/fox/badger/pheasant on the front.

totallyfrazzled · 19/09/2012 21:30

Thanks for responding ladies! Think I will try a gentle window shop tomorrow, but animal motifs sound alarming, may pass on that but look at the ankle boots. Don't they make they legs look stumpy tho, if owner is not pin thin?? :-o

I agree popcornia, there seems to be a fine line between being fashionable and wearing a uniform.

nipersvest · 19/09/2012 23:10

don't know if this will help, but here's a link to my style board on pinterest, i always get into a tizz over what to wear as the seasons change so started collecting some ideas together to help.

TheCraicDealer · 19/09/2012 23:10

Oxblood seems to be the "in" colour this season, and should look marvy with your hair. Asos have a feature on it on their website if you're looking for ideas.

nipersvest · 19/09/2012 23:13

also, browse polyvore, if can select what you want to see down the side, eg, all things brown, or skinny jeans etc, and it'll show you everyones ideas boards for outfits.

TudorJess · 19/09/2012 23:15

What's the best sort of ankle boot do you think? How do you find one that isn't a "mum boot"?

Fuchzia · 19/09/2012 23:26

I love your Pinterest board. I'm thinking tea-dresses with chunky tights are in? Can you carry that off past 25?

Iatemyskinnyperson · 19/09/2012 23:34

I am struggling this yr. I cannot do that ankle boot. Just makes me think of the 80's. Apparently we're over skinnies, or are we? Are the coloured jeans over? I just stand in shops spinning in circles Hmm

I cannot do another yr of straight leg jeans with tunicy sweaters. I am sick of those. So far I'm wearing slim bootleg Confused with nice neat cashmere. I've fudged the boot thing cos I'm still wearing my loafers, but my feet were cold today.

There's just nothing leaping out at me.

FaffTastic · 19/09/2012 23:43

Burgundy is the colour of the season so far if the shops are anything to go by.

MaBumble · 19/09/2012 23:54

I am currently recovering from a hysterectomy. All good but basically stuck at home with a bank card and internet connection.
Just in time to update my autumn/winter wardrobe.

So far I have bought & kept
Knee length burgundy boots, with lots of straps in memory of my teenage punk self.
Black cowl neck chunky poncho
teal corduroy shirt
black chinos & dark blue skinny jeans
Cream cable v neck sweater with hood

And I'm currently lusting after a long black leather jacket with hood and a pair of red fur lined wedge ankle boots.

Happy with my haul, but picking my way though the mountain of bloody animal prints is really getting on my wick!

StatisticallyChallenged · 20/09/2012 00:03

YY to the attach of burgundy - went out today and I think every second female had burgundy trousers of some kind on. I did a market research evening for Hobbs recently and their images had lots of burgundy shades too.

I can't do ankle boots either - I've only just been brave enough to buy some coloured skinnies (long thigh covering tops only!) but on me they really need heels to work, the last thing I can get away with is cutting several inches off my leg. There are still a lot of coloured trousers being worn here but maybe we are behind the times!

Personally, with the exception of my new coloured skinnies, I live in dresses. They're quick, easy, and for some reason seem to make pepole think I have made a load of effort. Some sort of dress, either with a print (tea dress-ish) or knitted, opaques or knitted tights and nice boots, with nice scarves etc seems to be my casual mainstay.

foofooyeah · 21/09/2012 11:49

I love dresses - just so easy you just put them on - bit of jewelry and/or scarf and your done.
