Oversized Tops and Jumpers - discuss!

I'm not sure what I think of them.

The "Does my Bum Look 40?" blogger wears them a lot, and I'm really tempted to buy one to wear with skinnies and boots, but then I hear a tiny voice in my ear - it's my mother, saying "what a shapeless top; it drowns your lovely figure."

And then I think, well I'm 45, too old to listen to my mother, but am I too old for this trend too? What is the general consensus? Any nice High Street examples?

I am a tall, slim size 10 btw.

I like them can only do loose lightweight Knut though as otherwise can look frumpy with boobs. I have a lovey stone coloured one with very fine gold tread through it and it's great worn as you describe.

noddyholder · 15/09/2012 22:58

Knit even!

SharpObject · 15/09/2012 22:59

I'm only very just 10 years younger than you and belive there is always a time when an oversized jumper, skinnys etc work wonders as a size 10/8.

I also believe fuck what anyone else thinks can you tell I've had wine ?

noddyholder · 15/09/2012 23:02

I am size12 and 46. I look ok I think. I like a tight vest skinnies big jumper ad boots age is jut a number

CointreauVersial · 15/09/2012 23:06

I've always tended to wear long tops with skinnies, and I'm now thinking big tops might be a better look. I agree, Noddy, fine knit over a vest sounds good. I'm not at all booby.

I spent my entire teenage years hiding my figure in oversized shapeless jumpers and (lumberjack) shirts. I'm not going to do it now. I just can't seperate it from how I dressed in the early 90's.

CointreauVersial · 15/09/2012 23:10

Quinn - I think that's exactly the problem! Those boxy tops from the 80s are still fresh in the memory.

Tall and size 10 is just the reason to do it Smile

CeeceeBloomingdale · 16/09/2012 07:19

I love them. If you're careful about choosing a good drape they can be very flattering with skinnies. I'm 5'2" and size 12.

suburban · 16/09/2012 08:19

Ooh I have been wearing this a lot lately to cover up early pregnancy and do have a bit of a why haven't I been doing this all my life feeling. I think the key is finding something nicely drapey without being too ship in full sale volumous. I always like 40bum's cowl neck tops from French Connection.

Go for it OP

peanutMD · 16/09/2012 08:26

My mum is 43 and a size 10 she practically lives in this style I think it looks great!

I am 25 and a size 20, I intend on living in leggings and long top/jumper dresses and my boots until atleast may next year as I am due DC2 in March.

Its a style that looks good on anyone I think and screw what everyone else thinks if you like it and feel comfortable then that's all that matters :o

MrsCampbellBlack · 16/09/2012 08:42

I'd like an oversized knit but want it to be a bit sheer so it doesn't drown me as I'm only 5ft.

ChablisLover · 16/09/2012 08:50

Need to be of a fine knit

I usually size down so not to billowy

And only for "slim" days

I love the cos jumper 40 bum lady posted this week. And the Zara shoes

Actually I want her wardrobe!Grin

MooMinCow · 16/09/2012 09:32

Well I got this from Topshop yesterday for the same reason, and to wear with some of my coloured skinnies into autumn. It's semi opaque and pretty long and comes in a grey colour too.

I'm still not sure though - I'm 5'4", size 10-12 hourglass and should be wearing more fitted stuff (according to Dressipi), but I don't like tight jumpers with tight skinnies (too Liz Hurley IMO).

bishboschone · 16/09/2012 09:49

I am 5 ft , size 8/10 if I wore this look I would look huge . I am hourglass and have big bum and thick legs . My small bit is my rib cage and waist before boobs kick in. It would be lost in a slouchy jumper .. I think it works best on apples with skinny legs .

carrie74 · 16/09/2012 10:42

I feel the same, but think 40YO bum lady looks great in her oversized tops, so am experimenting a bit more.

I got this yesterday (20% off in Debenhams): www.phase-eight.co.uk/fcp/product/phase-eight/Knitwear-&-Cardigans/Milo-Guinevere-Jumper/401240429

Phase Eight have a few drapey tops that are still this side of smart, but I've found I really need to try them. Some I think are going to be fab just make me look drowned in fabric.

I lived in the Zara linen tees this summer, though, they're truly fantastic (although mor dog a traditional shape, just loose).

carrie74 · 16/09/2012 10:43

More of, not mor dog

CointreauVersial · 16/09/2012 13:00

Thanks for the links; I'll have a look (after I've done the lunch; I'm getting the evils from DH....).

Coincidentally, a few weeks ago I tried on the Cos jumper with the lime trim that 40-Bum is wearing; I felt like Batman in it. But she looks fantastic. Envy

Well, I popped into Warehouse yesterday, took advantage of their 20% off deal and bought this in navy. It isn't 100% what I had in mind, but it's a gorgeous fine knit, quite wide on the body, with a silky panel on the front., and I sized up to a 12 so it was a bit longer at the front. This may be the start of something....
