I've just bought my first item from TK Maxx and now I want to know more about it...

I didn't have time to browse as my two DDs were with me, but I went in for the first time yesterday and found something I'd been looking EVERYWHERE for and am very pleased. Never occurs to me to go in as it always strikes me as being full of junk.

If you think it should become a staple shop in my limited list of go-to retailers, tell me why you like it.

Or why you don't...

TOYS! I stock up on a cupboard full for the thousands of party gifts. Have had those moving / purring cats for a tenner (fur real?), lots of Disney and Barbie toys / puzzles / kits etc.
amazing children's fancy dress costumes too - ours always have brilliant Tudor princess dresses complete with rows of pearls down the front

GoingforGoingforGOLD · 17/09/2012 14:22

years ago i had a coat from there, wore it for a few months weeks, had it dry cleaned as per the instructions and the colour ran and went quite peculiar. after much hoo ha they eventually refunded me. a few weeks later i found my coat complete with tell tale blim burns back for sale on the rail

brighthair · 17/09/2012 14:48

akaemmafrost - mine were proper UGGs. I got more discount as they were marked Wink
When I say marked I mean 1/4 size of a 5p coin. They had loads of chocolate brown ones in

SuperB0F · 17/09/2012 15:01

Didn't an MNer end up buying her own hat in there after losing it? A member of staff had scooped it up and stuck a £7.99 price tag on it Grin

MrsHoarder · 17/09/2012 15:57

I look for fabric quality too. And when I was skint and needed a smart dress (networking event) I found a bargain dress for a fiver (RRP £350). The catch being that it had a small amount of damage, but I'm reasonably handy with a needle/thread and fixed it in 10 mins. Looked stunning Grin.

Tbh a lot of high st stuff is poor quality, and TKMaxx is at least a bit different.

SugarBatty · 17/09/2012 16:11

I love it, got various stuff over the years. The standouts are lots of baby dior stuff for dd, grobags for ds for 15 quid. And a burberry cashmere and wool long coat for £50 quid! This is the 3rd winter I will be wearing it and its amazing!

Is the website worth checking out?

I normally go as soon as it opens as its tidy or the hour before it closes for the same reason.

squoosh · 17/09/2012 16:14

The website isn't half as good as actually going in store.

Itsgottabebags · 17/09/2012 16:18

Yup. I have see them with my own eyes. Real Uggs

pookamoo · 17/09/2012 16:22

I bought an amazing dress and shoes in there to wear to a friend's wedding. I love them and need another excuse to wear them or I shall just put them on to do the hoovering Grin

When I googled the brands though, nothing came up. I am unconvinced by designer labels to be honest. I have also bought a pair of Oscar De La Renta sunglasses in there for £10. Love them and have so far managed not to lose them, which is a first for me. Again I didn't really recognised the brand and was pleasantly surprised to find out that a similar pair was about £150 on their website.

SugarBatty · 17/09/2012 16:26

Iv just seen uggs on the website for about 20 percent cheaper so not a reason to buy them unless you were going to buy them elsewhere for full price!

My one has lots of nice wooden toys and unusual kids shoes thgat sound italian. They do gingerbread houses at christmas too which are cute stocking fillers!

pinkbluepink · 17/09/2012 21:29

I'm a big fan and TKMaxx is a bit of a destination shop for me although I agree with previous posters that it's best to go first thing in the morning when it's tidy, and visit regularly. Some bargains over the years include:
Italian leather bags - all under £30
7 for all Mankind jeans - £20
Elle Macpherson underwear all under £10
Cashmere sweaters
Hunter wellies for £30
beautiful glass table lamps with shades for £25
Barbour wax jacket £50
Missoni sunglasses £12.99
Ralph Lauren men's shirts and polos, luggage, beautiful scented candles, soaps, Bedhead shampoo and conditioner, tights............the list goes on and on.

Never knew there was an online version...........(goes off to look)

Secondsop · 18/09/2012 08:55

We really like it. I think it's better for men's clothes than women's clothes (my husband has got branded jeans, shirts, shorts, tshirts, a really good winter coat, hoodies, running clothes, shoes and trainers from there). Other things I've got from there:

  • bedding: high thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets, and duvet sets from the likes of Designers Guild, Sanderson. There was also some Orla Kiely leaf-print stuff the other day
  • cookware: tins/bakeware, Le Creuset stoneware, good little gadgets, Emma Bridgewater tea towels
  • sunglasses: Kenneth cole, lulu Guinness, calvin Klein.
  • shoes: they don't often have a great selection in my size (7) but I've got Kickers trainers before, and recently got some 3-strap Birkenstocks
  • bags and luggage - osprey leather purses, good Antler duffle/wheely bag
  • cushions
  • scented candles in jars, and those diffusing stick things
  • Furniture! We picked up an upholstered storage ottoman that was absolutely perfect for our hallway. Another couple was sniffing round it so I had to sit on it in a proprietal manner while my husband finished the rest of his clothes shopping.
trixymalixy · 18/09/2012 09:13

I have heard that to get some of the good stuff, TKMaxx also have to take stock that no-one else wants as part of the deal, which is why there is some junk.

I love it, I bought oneill sunsuits for the kids for £3 each last year, I bought them in their current sizes and a couple of bigger sizes too, they have eczema so wear them swimming every week.

I have loads of French Connection tops, Calvin Klein dresses, Hunter wellies for £30, DH has diesel and FC jeans and tshirts.

Antler luggage, le creuset etc.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 18/09/2012 09:45

Yes I remember about the MNetter buying her own hat! Grin

I also remember seeing the little brown bear that came free with tins of salmon on the shelf, scuffed and worn yet marked up for £2.99... Confused

I might conduct an experiment, leave a mumsnet scarf in there and see if it gets priced and shelved!

ChippyMinton · 18/09/2012 09:53

When I was at the cash desk the other day, a member of staff wandered over to the cashier clutching a black woollen scarf and said "Idon't know if this is stock or lost property. I'll leave it here for a bit in case anyone claims it, BEFORE I DO ANYTHING ELSE".

I instantly thought of the MNetter's hat!

peanutMD · 18/09/2012 11:02

We did used to get told to tag things lying around as it may well be stock...

with regards to the ex freebies, we used to get the leftover stocks for much cheapness before selling them for at rediculously inflated prices.

Corygal · 18/09/2012 12:26

I bought a Theory cashmere dress, black, kneelength and fabulous for forty quid ten minutes ago in TK. Pic on net a porter:

www.net-a-porter.com/product/158897?cm_mmc=LinkshareUK--Hy3bqNL2jtQ--Custom-_-LinkBuilder&siteID=Hy3bqNL2jtQ-_d1s6lckWLU9rNg9Zv5xiQ

I am a fan, not least because the shop is next to the bus stop I use to get home from work, and thanks to the paucity of local transport, I can usually nip in once a day, which is one reason it works as a retail destination.

trixymalixy · 18/09/2012 13:14

This thread inspired me to go for a rummage. I tried in a lovely all saints leather jacket reduced from 395 to 80 and an all saints tweed blazer reduced from 195 to 60. I'm already regretting not buying the blazer.

I stuck it in with the Men's skiwear, if it's still there tomorrow.....

squoosh · 18/09/2012 13:16

I hide stuff too for when I have the cash! Grin

I'm sure everyone does.

mathanxiety · 18/09/2012 17:00

I used to get Elefanten shoes for the DDs there when they were small.

i dont consider it hiding
its strategic relocation
so no one else canny nips in

mathanxiety · 18/09/2012 22:20

Best not to strategically relocate in a place where it will stick out like a sore thumb and not in a heavily trafficked area either.

sleepdodger · 18/09/2012 23:28

This made me stop off at a tkmaxx on sunday Blush
And I got a gorgeous all saints jacket woo hooGrin
295 to 70
I coverted it in all saints at Christmas too
The mega bargain was a wool all saints coat beautiful but a six and I'm a ten I tried arching my shoulders but it didn't fit but was red stickered to 34!!!!!!!
So it's your fault I spend 72 2 on red liquorice by the tillBlush

scottishmummy · 19/09/2012 18:40

wouldn't admit it rl,but aye hide stuff
to strategically retrieve later
but I think it would be frowned upon to fess up (though I know others do it)
