Help. Nails breaking / peeling all the time

PinguFanatic · 13/09/2012 12:50

I keep trying to grow my fingernails, however they either seem to peel, which makes them really thin and flimsy and break, or I get little rips where the fingernail touches the skin at the side and so the whole nail which I've spent months growing breaks off.

I want to grow decent length nails that don't keep falling apart. I have this memory from when i was younger of seeing an advert of a woman opening a can of coke with her fingernail, I want nails like that! Or is that just a pipe dream and it can only be done with fake nails (and strong glue)?

You need to eat some jelly babies!

Could be a vitamin D deficiency - do you spend time in the sun (when we see it in this country?)

PinguFanatic · 13/09/2012 12:58

I do spend a lot of time in the sun. I've just (yesterday) started taking some vitamin tablets as I pondered if vitamins could be something to do with it.

Use a nail hardener, like Sally Hansen. Just looks like clear nail polish. I've only been able to grow my nails since using this.

valiumredhead · 13/09/2012 13:24

You need Sally Hansen Miracle cure - in the blue bottle, about 9 quid and worth every penny!

Nowt worked on me until OPI Nail Envy. Great stuff.

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/09/2012 16:13

Get some MM tablets off amazon, I'm on the Solgar ones since may and my nails are much longer and stronger.

Just broke two of the feckers today though.

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/09/2012 16:13

MSM tablets even.

ffs.

CumberdickBendybatch · 13/09/2012 16:19

I thought it was zinc for nails, or am I making that up?

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/09/2012 16:35

No, zinc too.

Zinc citrate is best iirc.

CumberdickBendybatch · 13/09/2012 16:43

Thought so.

I've been taking zinc for a couple of months now, there's a ridge across my nails where they seem to be growing thicker and stronger. Thinking about it they used to be really flakey and haven't split for ages now :)

PinguFanatic · 13/09/2012 17:08

/goes off to check the vitamin tablets for Zinc.

Looks like they have zinc in them so hopefully that will start to make a difference. I also popped out and got the Sally Henson miracle cure stuff.

Thanks for all the help, hopefully I'll have lovely long nails soon!
