You know those tops with poppers underneath like a baby vest but for women?

They were fashionable when I was a young teen - with an oversized chequered, flannel shirt worn open over the top. I never had one.

But I just saw some in a catalogue, and thought "Ooh, those would be just the thing to keep my back warm in cold weather." Blush

So...has/does anyone wear them?
Are they uncomfortable? (I'm concerned about their potential to give you a wedgie, especially if you bend down)
Are you supposed to wear pants underneath them?

I'd be wearing it as a vest, so not bothered if they are a huge fashion faux-pas, as it would be out of sight anyway.

I've got a cheapy one from primark (a body) and its fine and handy under shirts when I tuck them into jeans.

I don't wear knickers underneath.

SpicyPear · 12/09/2012 13:23

I got one last year for under sheer stuff. Reminded me exactly why I hated them first time around. It gives me a wedgie and takes me about half an hour to do back up if I need a wee when out and about. Also can't bear not to wear knickers underneath so have terrible rucking issues.

squeaver · 12/09/2012 13:26

Yes they give you a wedgie. Yes they're uncomfortable. No, you're not supposed to wear knickers under them and you get double-VPL if you do. They are - literally - a pain in the arse.

DarrellRivers · 12/09/2012 13:28

A body
I used to wear them, with pants as a vest top
I found them fairly comfortable and were easier than a top tucked into trousers/skirts

Havingkittens · 12/09/2012 13:30
  • and god help you if you get stuck in a public loo with no loo roll and have to drip dry before getting your hands in there to try and do the bloody poppers back up!
shrimponastick · 12/09/2012 13:32

Oh god.

I had one -it was very tight - hence very difficult to do up the poppers. Miss one of the three poppers and the whole under part pinged back up.

Maybe it didn't help that I spent most of my late teens/early twenties pissed- and having to visit pub toilets.

Who on earth thought they should be resurrected???

YouForgotToCallMePeppa · 12/09/2012 13:36

Hmm, maybe not such a good idea then.

And there I was thinking I'd solved all my cold, draughty back issues Sad

(4 yo DD is sitting next to me and she asked what I was writing about, so I told her. She thought for a bit, then said, face flushed with inspiration, I know mummy, if you wore a great big nappy underneath it wouldn't be uncomfortable then, would it! Grin)

Ha I used to love them and also second hand check shirts from charity shops.

Anyway now you are grown up you don't want a body, you need a Haramaki, recommended by someone on here, they are fab, get one (or three Wink).

squeaver · 12/09/2012 15:00

You need to get some of those long vests from M&S. Hang on and I'll look for a link.

squeaver · 12/09/2012 15:01

M&S vests

YouForgotToCallMePeppa · 12/09/2012 17:47

Ooh, thanks for those links! I have a M&S voucher, so I'll def get some vests.

Intrigued by the haramaki too though, might have to try one - DH did suggest last year that I wear maternity trousers or one of those maternity bump bands in the winter.

Another Haramaki shop this is where I got mine from, I couldn't find it before.

They are fab, I like them better than vests as they keep you just as warm but somehow are less fiddly and because they are just round your waist they don't need washing everyday [lazy].

onemoreforgoodmeasure · 12/09/2012 18:20

Spicypear and Havingkittens, pinged back up shrimpon!!!!!

(off to look at the haramaki link)

My lasting memories of bodies are drunk girls in nightclubs with the back section hanging out of their trousers/leggings because they were too drunk to do them up. Grin

numptymark1 · 12/09/2012 18:46

I remember bodies first time round too

the trick is to get a size bigger and I do wear knickers

get them from H&M, and it's to keep my back warm, no other reason
