Expensive mistakes

I am looking at myjumper in despair. I coveted a sparkly V-neck boxy jumper from the White Company for ages but could not being myself to spend £85 on it. Saw one on Ebay and somehow (was I insane? drunk?) ended up in a bit of a bidding war and paid £55 for it. Tried to see it as a bargain (really, £55 is not exactly a giveaway, is it?), but...

Ten minutes after I'd worn it for the first time I had four giant pulls in it as the cat jumped on top of me, and it would appear to be made of the type of fabric that pulls and catches like buggery if you so much as look at it the wrong way. Got several more catches in it that same night just with my nails.

The second time I wore it I spilled mustard all down the front. Of course it's a hand-wash-in-cold-water-only garment, because of the shape and the sparkly bits. And you're not allowed to rub it. Or put Vanish on it. Or wring it out. Or dry clean it. Soaked it in cold water. Did the stain come out? No. Tried again in warm water. Still there.

So I am now looking down at my lovely £55 jumper that I have worn twice and that is covered in pulls and has indelible mustard stains on the front. Marvellous. Naturally things I have bought off Ebay that cost a tenth of that are still going strong. Would anyone like to make me feel better by confessing similar expensive wardobe errors?

Two things...a coat from Fever London (in a sale but still) which I absolutely hate after wearing it once - everyone else liked it, but I'm sure it would get ignored on ebay.
and a Biaggi bag from TKMaxx that I have never worn. Also probably pointless trying to sell it.

Anyone fancy a swaps thread? Smile

EdMcDunnough · 12/09/2012 10:03

On the other hand, NICE expensive things I've bought have been an Eribe scarf (yes yes) and my favourite ever coat from Toast which is amazing, though the lining fell apart and I had to send it back so they would give me a decent partial refund. Which they did, and I still have the coat, the lining in tatters, it's beautiful.

I've got some pretty nice boots I've barely/never worn as well if we do do any swaps...some hobbs ones and some Geox riding boots.

overthemill · 12/09/2012 10:04

omg you guys should do a swaps thread! i can't believe how much wasted money is on this thread alone! I was going to admit to a pair of £90 shoes from hobbs sale that i only wore about 10 times ...but that looks positively excellent value compared to yours Grin

EdMcDunnough · 12/09/2012 10:15

Oh yes, my Belstaff boots. They have probably got to go as well.

They are great - but too flimsy to wear on the bike (note to self: these are no longer a utility item of motorcycle wear, but a fashion statement) and I feel silly in them with normal clothes.

I like to stroke them now and again though. Anyone fancy some trialmasters?

EdMcDunnough · 12/09/2012 10:16

They did come from ebay btw. I did not pay £400 for them, no way José Smile

Two come to mind....

Last year, shopping with my mum (for her) she managed to talk me into a Planet coat. She and the sales team oohed and aaahed about how it was so right for me. I have never ever worn it.

In the summer.... Looking for a non-sparkly cream bronzer, my Mac one having gone missing, I bought the Chanel tan Soleil Universal. I quite simply can not "do it". Got talked into the brush too. But I love (and use) the brush with something else.

ruby22 · 12/09/2012 10:23

Have been putting my expensive unworn mistakes on eBay, shocked at how much stuff still in wardrobe with labels still on, has made me quite ruthless about clearing stuff out. Other stuff only worn once or twice and stuffed to back of shelf all needs to go.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 12/09/2012 10:27

I have a beautiful pair of jimmy choo shoes - I have worn them a few times. These are my slight bargain bought at outlet store. Comfy, black, classic. I adore them. So...

fast forward a few months and I decide that I need a similar pair - but in tan colour. I buy them but dont stand up in them when tried on, get home, wear them around the house (wooden floors) and they are much higher than my black pair.

I have had an op on my spine and cant wear shoes that high. Got to sell them but I cant bring myself to ebay them. Sad they are currently in their choo bag with card thingy and sitting in my wardrobe.

Kaloobear · 12/09/2012 10:31

Eliza it's a wonderful bronzer! Try it with a stippling brush and only use a tiny amount of product on the brush tips. Brush it into hollows and blend, blend, blend...

HoopDePoop · 12/09/2012 11:38

I'm up for swapping my Mulberry scarf. It's one - Tamara in plaster pink. No idea what for, PM me if you have a similar white elephant in your wardrobe!

HoopDePoop · 12/09/2012 11:39

Doh this one

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 12/09/2012 11:44

Just checked my shoes in USA and they are $700 - feel such an eejit. Last year I charity shopped a whole load of brand new things with tags still on. Of course I should have ebayed them but I just wanted to be clutter free.

Maybe we should do a swap thread. I am after a blue leather handbag. Big, bucket bag sort of style - with a zip not a popper fastening. I saw one in TK maxx that I really liked, didnt get it, went back a few weeks later and it was gone. Havent saw any that I like since then.

ihatethecold · 12/09/2012 12:00

Ladies. Try a shop like a frock exchange. We have a shop in my village where they will sell on good quality women's clothes. The owner of the shop gets some of the profit.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 12/09/2012 12:29

we have shops like that around where I live ihate but some take 50% of selling price and I dont want to do that. I think that is a bit greedy. Blush

If I sell I want someone to get a bargain and not have to pay 50% in 'fees'

Ive listed my shoes on ebay now. I'd rather someone got use of them.

Eliza22 · 12/09/2012 14:17

[kaloobear].... So I need to buy ANOTHER brush?? Any recommendations! Smile

Sleepwhenidie · 12/09/2012 14:29

This thread is heartbreaking! I too have many but most recent was washing a new DVF bikini along with DS's raincoat without doing the coat up first...so the bikini came out attached to the velcro patches on the raincoat and is now kind of fluffy Sad.

I also have a fabulous pair of red patent Louboutin peep toe sandals that are just too high to walk further than a few metres in so just get admired in their box from time to time Blush

madmomma · 12/09/2012 15:50

hoop I'll swap your scarf for something. What size are you? I have too many expensive mistakes to mention!

HoopDePoop · 12/09/2012 16:05

Yay. Am size ten ish? Whatcha got?

madmomma · 12/09/2012 16:15

Oh balls! I'm a fattie so not much then :(

madmomma · 12/09/2012 16:15

you don't take an 8 shoe do you?

chickydoo · 12/09/2012 16:46

I have several ruined Brora items Sad those horrid little clothes moths love cashmere! I have now filled my wardrobe with the whole of Lakeland's moth killing shelf.
I've ebayed lots that I don't wear, but I still have a worn twice Missoni cardi, a pair of Boden purple boots size 5 (too big in calf, I have skinny old legs) a reiss top with sheer sleeves cost £70 tags still on.
I'm doing well as I have hardly brought anything new this year.....I must wear all my clothes...I must wear all my clothes.....I must wear all my clothes....I must wear all my clothes......

CeeceeBloomingdale · 12/09/2012 19:16

Loving your scarf HoopDePoop, what's you style? Am kicking myself for geting rid of loads to the charity shop last week now!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/09/2012 19:34

I know it's not proper posh stuff, but does anyone want a couple of Karen Millen cocktail dresses? I bought them years ago and have worn them once each, if that.

Mama1980 · 12/09/2012 19:35

Ooh feminist dragon what size? Smile

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/09/2012 19:43

I've got a silvery grey one in a 14, and a black one-shoulder one in a 14. I don't need them, and this thread is reminding me it'd be good if someone gets a use from them! I've been put off ebay, so if anyone does fancy, first person who says can have them.
