winter walking boots

I need boots for walking the dog/general hacking about in the winter. I live in the countryside, but generally walk on the road...they need to cope with rain and muck, but still be comfortable enough to walk a good few miles. Last winter I wore trainers, but I got heartily sick of having wet feet.

What do I need? Do I need hiking boots? I can't imagine wellies would be comfy enough to cover 4/5 miles - no support. Does such an item exist for a person with little spare cash?

I got some last year from M&S (a hiking boot style ) .Stormwear, advertised as waterproof.
Very comfy, easy to wear, drive in.
I bought the blue/grey. They had a brown too.

Can't see them online but I'm hoping they bring a black pair out.

Can't remember the price but IIRC it was

Sorel are brilliant for walking.

Have just bought these in Tkmaxx for £45.

Really comfy and warm but I feel I should take them back as I have 2 other similar pairs

I got proper walking boots from TKMaxx
After years of DH telling me I needed them
He was right
They are fab.

My most recent pair are from Clarkes and they are fab, warm, comfy and waterproof. I bought the shoe type this time but they had a boot style as well.

North Face Abby III. They're snowboots, but great in the wet, incredibly comfortable and robust.

Should have said, you can get great deals on them if you hunt about, and they last years.

Thx so much, lots of great suggestions. Will start at TK Maxx and go from there.

I'd recommend 'country' boots from an outdoorsy place like these (I've had a few pairs of Toggi, Dublin & Harry Hall are supposed to be ok, Ariat have a good rep)

I got the Ugg Newberry last year and I love them. Warm, comfy, tough and waterproof. A bit pricey at full price but you might find them on offer somewhere, I got mine in a sale.
