Hello S & B experts. Can you help? I'm looking for dresses for work ideally like this www.hobbs.co.uk/product/display?productID=0212-5446-3671L00&productvarid=0212-5446-3671L00-BLACK-14&refpage=dresses/city-dresses but I have a navy one already and I don't want black. Can be short sleeved or sleeveless or long sleeved. Ideally cheaper than Hobbs but will pay if I have to. Most importantly must be machine washable. TIA

Madam - may I be of assistance? I have just returned from a trip up the Kings Road sorting the wardrobe of me mate. I too like these dresses, and I too think 129 is way too much. What works better:

  1. Zara do these dresses in about 4 styles, if you can fit into them. Three women in Zara 20 min ago, sizes 8, 12 and 14 (short) respectively. We struggled to get our arms into anything but when we did, results were impressive. Cost from 39 to 59.
  1. Banana Republic do them for about 85 and their fit may work better on you, partic as they do tall and petite.
  1. Preen Edition at Debenhams does a foxy one for 69 - but beware itchy lining.
  1. All are machine wash, but more importantly, or you'll never wear it, think: whether the fabric is matt enough (miles more slimming) stickiness of the lining, whether the fabric will attract bits, oh those miserable bits, and finally check you can bend double without flashing.
  1. Also think dark green and dark purple - more interesting, can accessorise with all black and therefore easier to wear.
  1. Or look for other styles at Cos, who offer a fine dress.
