Ankle Boots - it's no good, I can't contain it anymore...

I know loads of people here love them, but I think they are super-shiiiitt.

Breathes

There. I have spoken the heresy aloud. And I feel much better for it.

I just want to know if I'm alone on this one. They make me think of 80s cowboy boots with the tops lopped off. Christ, I even hate the Acne ones. Just look at 'em (real and imitation):

Urgh. Not for me. Never. Ever. Unless I am in a nursing home and someone else is dressing me, by which time I probably won't care.

I splurged on the Ash Jalouse ones. I love them. I wore them at the weekend (when it was pretty chiily) with a tea dress, cardigan and thick opaque tights. No idea if that's how you're meant to wear them or a huge faux pas, but I felt good in that outfit and it's probably how I'll spend most of Autumn.

LesleyPumpshaft · 05/09/2012 10:11

Idk if Per Una do boots, but someone posted a link on here for M&S shoes a while back to some of the worst footwear I've ever seen.

Unfortunately, you can't un-see things.

TheShapeJaper · 05/09/2012 10:15

BuildersTea what colour did you get them in? I am desperate for a pair and was thinking black but just cant make my mind up! Confused

regnamechange · 05/09/2012 10:16

BuildersTea that's how I would wear them

noddyholder · 05/09/2012 10:18

They do look nice with dresses

BuildersTea · 05/09/2012 10:21

Must confess I took the inspiration for that outfit from my husband's 23 year old cousin Blush

Can't remember the exact colour name of mine, but they're the dark grey ones.

DonaAna · 05/09/2012 11:10

Black mum boots are back - saw them featured on Sept Vogue ;)
Hanging on to mine - the tide will turn soon.
I think they are a classic item and of course they will keep coming back.

nilbyname · 05/09/2012 11:54

regnamchange Yuk, boots 2,3,6 and maybe 4 are mum boots! Grin

vive le differance!

Niceupthedance · 05/09/2012 12:14

I have some patent brogues from topshop - cannot see how ankle boots are flattering at all, sorry.

squoosh · 05/09/2012 12:34

I can't get on board with the women's flat brogue thing at all. Bit '1930's girl's boarding school chemistry teacher' for me.

Turquoiseblue · 05/09/2012 12:58

I tried on brogues whilst shopping with the dc s in tow ..... Took them off quick smart when ds asked me why I was trying on daddy's shoes Grin

Love ankle boots though - have a pair of lovely ash ones winging their way to me as we speak, and next month going to get asos aggies for hacking around the playgrounds in!
I agree the knee high boots are feeling a bit mumsy in comparison but I ll still be wearing mine when it gets colder Blush

CointreauVersial · 05/09/2012 13:06

I loathe brogues, but had an interesting conversation in Clarks yesterday - apparently lace-up brogue-type shoes are the must-have teen girls school shoes this year. This was confirmed by a group of 15yo girls I got talking to. Ballet pumps are o-v-e-r.

The comment about ankle boots from the 80s - they were very different back then, much wider around the ankles (i.e. pixie boots) but could be worn with a skirt if your legwarmers were sufficiently ruched. Grin

regnamechange · 05/09/2012 13:53

I feel I need brogues.....Confused

Niceupthedance · 05/09/2012 13:53

Squoosh - in parts of East London it is a good thing to dress like a middle aged teacher.

regnamechange · 05/09/2012 14:25

More must have mum boot reading Grin

What about these: I'm hovering over the checkout button right now!

ovariantryst · 05/09/2012 15:02

Urgh. That's set off my itchy teeth all over again. Especially the 'edgy mum' ones with a few studs tacked on.

I am not to keen on styleguile's latest, either - but my hatred of brogues is a whole other bag of neuroses, let alone ones with a heel tacked on.:

styleguile.blogspot.co.uk

I've realise, btw, with reading that it's not so much the ankle boots per se, but the big lump of elastic on the sides on some. Well -that was the theory until I saw the school gate beauties!

A good thing to dress like a middle aged teacher.

Hmmm, still think I'd rather be the baddest girl in the Upper Sixth at St Agatha's.

FrancesFarmer · 05/09/2012 15:55

The difference between Mum boots and cool boots?

It's hard to explain it in words. Mum boots tend to have a softer shape and the leather is of a finer grain and thus looks more fragile. Towards the front of the boot, where leather meets sole, looking from the side, the leather part of Mum boots slopes down gradually whereas Acne-style boots have a sort of curve.

I like these Whistles ones: www.whistles.co.uk/fcp/categorylist/dept/shop?resetFilters=true#ID=id_903000058696_newin_EUR&category=newin

The curve here is veering towards Mum boot territory but the clumpy heel saves them and brings them into the realm of something-Chloe-Sevigny-might-wear.

Thumbwitch · 05/09/2012 16:00

I love ankle boots. I love knee high boots as well. What I don't like are the inbetweenies, and what I really loathe are Uggs (well-named).

But my boots have to have some heel on them, minimum 1.5" but max 3" or I can't walk (bad ankles/hips)

Wearing them with skirts - well, ones like these are designed to be worn with skirts, really. They would look daft with jeans/trousers.

squoosh · 05/09/2012 16:01

Th worst of all boots are knee high suede ones. Awful, just awful. So Pippa Middleton.

Sorry Pippa!

worldgonecrazy · 05/09/2012 16:01

They look crap on Fearne Cotton. Like she's found a pair of 80s mum boots in the cupboard and not even bothered to give them a polish.
