There have been huge improvements in dentistry in a generation. Many adults who wear braces today would not have been considered worthy candidates for orthodontics when they were young. My own front teeth are not straight, yet since my bite (molars etc) is perfect, 1970s/80s dentists did not want to touch my teeth, despite my own and my mother's insistence and consulting several dentists (and cost was not an issue).

DD, who has very similar teeth to me, is going to have braces at 8 in order to widen her mouth and create a bit more space, and will then have them all straightened once all her teeth are through. Different era and different techniques.
