Winter coats for dc

Whenisitmysleepytime · 02/09/2012 10:39

Where are you buying/ bought coats for your dc this winter?

both of mine need new coats as ds' green parka will still be too big for dd this year as she hasn't grown anywhere near as much as he did. Hmm

i'm looking for warm, waterproof, machine washable.

ds will need a 4 or maybe 4-5yo size (he's 3.5). dd will need a 18-24mo as she's average height (but has diddy arms).

is boden worth the money?

i'm not very impressed with what i've seen in next or m&s but i think there will probably be more in shops soon.

where would you get your dc's coats?

we got ours from Matalan

I have older DC's, but find Debenhams coats and H&M coats tend to do two winters, so although they are £35-£45 each, over two years of continuous use, it works out cheaper to buy from there.

Supermarket coats, the zips usually break within a few months, so the £15 cost is a false economy IMO.

For 19mo DS3, my ex and I are going halves on a fleece lined, waterproof all in one snowsuit type thing, all in one so that with wellies he can splash in muddy puddles to his heart's content without ruining his clothes. It's around £40 from JoJoMamanBebe.

CouthyMowWearingOrange · 02/09/2012 11:44

Good resale value on the JoJo all in ones too...

Whenisitmysleepytime · 02/09/2012 12:29

I usually buy big - with the aim of getting 2 years out of coats.
Dd will be drowned in a 2-3 size tho as she's not tall and has little arms. :)

I had a look on the jojo website for coats. They had a 4in 1 type thing here do you think I'd be warm enough?

We're moving from SW about 150 miles north so we need to be prepared for a colder winter! Confused

I agree about the supermarket ones - those are the ones that I get asked to fix by children at school at playtime. Hmm

Anyone had a coat from muddy puddles? Their all in one waterproof suits are fantastic. :)

I was in a Jojo shop yesterday and fell in love with the whole shop the coats. Even the more simple waterproof/fleece ones looked really warm and good quality.

My 4 year old DTs are going into their second winter in their Boden fleece lined anoraks. Bought the 3-4 last year - probably a little generous on em at first but fine now. Used a discount code. They're warm and wash well. Great coats!

Whenisitmysleepytime · 02/09/2012 18:45

Millie do you have boys or girls? The boys fleece lined anorak looks a lot more substantial than the girls one! Hmm

popsypie · 02/09/2012 19:45

Boden and joules always lovely - wash well and last forever! Defo worth the extra money - actually boden prices seem more in line with next for coats now - or is that just me? Grin

popsypie · 02/09/2012 19:46

Oh and I have girls

Whenisitmysleepytime · 02/09/2012 20:34

Popsypie - yes the Boden fleece lined anorak looked remarkable normal priced! Shock

Does anyone have the Boden girls fleece lined anorak? it doesn't look anywhere near as substantial as the boys version.

Will go have a look at joules as I forgot about them! :)

OP posts:
popsypie · 02/09/2012 20:41

Yes and it is substantial, but bought last year so can't comment on this year's version

Bookbrain · 02/09/2012 20:44

Marks and Sparks pretty good quality vs cost.

ruby22 · 02/09/2012 20:46

Yes the Boden fleece lined anorak is worth the money. I now buy one for each every autumn and some of the earlier ones have now been through all 3 Dcs and then been ebayed so it represents good value for us.

Aboutlastnight · 02/09/2012 20:46

We got some fabulous down-filled showerproof coats for the girls in Benetton

BikeRunSki · 02/09/2012 20:48

We had one of these H&M ski jackets last year. It is brilliant, warm, waterproof, well built etc. DS has grown massively this year, which is a shame as last year's coat is almost as good as new. Ho hum, DD can have it in a couple of years.

MadStaringEyes · 02/09/2012 21:02

I bought coats in last years sales. Ds2 has a blue zoo fleasy thing with attached mittens and Ds1's jeep one from last year.

I bought Ds1 a lovely Ted baker one, clearly blinded by the reduction. Then realised that it is wool and will be a bitch to get dry, so my parents bought him a quilted jacket from asda for preschool.

Whenisitmysleepytime · 02/09/2012 21:02

Well I've trawled through a lot of places and so far

M&S - nothing special and I've had some v poor quality stuff from there so I'm not sure I trust them. Their girls stuff looked especially meh.
Next - same as marks but at least I've not had quality issue there.
John Lewis - nothing special unless you spend £50 on joules.
joules - nice but dear
Jojo maman bebe - look v practical but not sure of sizing
Boden - boys looks good, girls one doesn't look anywhere near as sturdy. girls boys

Will have a look at h&m next. :)

Always get my dc coats from next...some have lasted 2 winters.
No issues.

anchovies · 02/09/2012 21:09

I bought Didriksons for my 3 dcs last year and plan to again. They were extremely warm, completely waterproof plus very hardwearing (wash and dry overnight which is essential in this house!)

NCForNow · 02/09/2012 21:09

I have seen a lovely one in Vertbaudet and not too expensive. Or M&S as usual. I hate finding coats as DD1 is 8 now and it gets harder.

NCForNow · 02/09/2012 21:10

Oh actually I got a lovely one last year in H&M! Hit and miss there but when you strike it lucky it's good.

Millie1 · 02/09/2012 21:42

Sorry Whenis, just getting back now. Girls. Can't compare with the boys version but these are a good weight and really warm. You could always order with free postage and returns code and you have nothing to lose. Off to check JoJo out - lots of good reviews further up!

CouthyMowWearingOrange · 02/09/2012 21:58

The sizing is quite large in JoJo - having tried them on my DS3, the waterproof all in ones, he needed a size smaller than I thought he would. He is currently 19mo, and wearing 18-24 months everywhere, so I figured a 2-3 would be right, to last the whole winter. The 18-24 month one currently drowns him! I'm ordering the 18-24 month one to last the winter. Am hoping it fits a bit better by mid-October as it's quite large!

GoodHeavensNo · 02/09/2012 22:01

Don't bother with Vertbaudet. I ordered one of their lovely duffle coats for DD a month ago and I heard nothing for ages, and then they sent me an email yesterday to say they've cancelled the order. No reason given. But they still charged me £4 postage for the free gift that came with it that I didn't even want! Their customer service is the pits.

Pannacotta · 02/09/2012 22:05

H&M ski jackets, as linked to before.
Really sturdy, warm and look good too.
My only niggle is that the hood is removable which is a pita (the DSs have often had theirs pulled off at school).
