Winter coats for dc

Whenisitmysleepytime · 02/09/2012 10:39

Where are you buying/ bought coats for your dc this winter?

both of mine need new coats as ds' green parka will still be too big for dd this year as she hasn't grown anywhere near as much as he did. Hmm

i'm looking for warm, waterproof, machine washable.

ds will need a 4 or maybe 4-5yo size (he's 3.5). dd will need a 18-24mo as she's average height (but has diddy arms).

is boden worth the money?

i'm not very impressed with what i've seen in next or m&s but i think there will probably be more in shops soon.

where would you get your dc's coats?

Got my ds (aged 8) a great Barbour coat from one of their outlet stores. Very snug and great quality for £30 and luckily without an in your face label!

Jojay · 02/09/2012 22:37

The Jojo fleece lined waterproof jackets are fab. Sizing is generous - ds2 wore age 2-3 to 3 1/2 - and he wore his for 2 winters and it still looks perfect. He's getting another one this year. DS1 who is now too big for jojo will get the Boden Anorak.

There's always codes around for both jojo and Boden, so check before you buy.

TuttoRhino · 02/09/2012 22:42

I got my DD a coat from Lindex last year. it's online only in the UK but it's decent quality stuff and washes well. Her coat from last year still looks new.

This year I got her a Verbaudet one on sale but I'm still a bit meh about it. Like the Boden ski jacket but can't bring myself to pay that price for it.

mememummy · 02/09/2012 22:46

Just bought a Vertbaudet one for Dd(4) had to get age 6 but it's lovely and warm and feels waterproof and easy to zip up Grin there customer service is hit and miss though

Brandnewbrighttomorrow · 02/09/2012 22:48

Have you had a look at lands end? They're expensive but good quality and generous on the sizing. My best coat buy was a north face down filled jacket for my eldest - very expensive but she's worn it solidly for two winters and it's in terrific condition still so will be keeping it for dc3. I love down filled jackets - light and warm, never get overheated in mine. I had a heavy synthetic filled coat for dc2 last winter and had to layer up with a fleece underneath as he froze otherwise.

The best ones I've found are the Gap 'Warmest Coats' - they're down-filled and very toasty- usually get 2 year's wear from them, buy buying slightly big.
They don't seem to be in shops yet this year though... Hmm probably won't be much longer.
The Gap 'Puffa' coat is not the same, nor down-filled.

Honestly, my children are always snug and toasty in these, and they're machine washable, they clean up well. They often have a 20% off in September or early october too, which is when I buy them- you can sign up to their mailing list to be notified by email.

(honestly, I don't work for Gap!!)

accessorizequeen · 03/09/2012 00:39

I have the Togz warm and dry for ds2 5.9 and thinking of getting another in red for ds3 3.11 as it's so fab. Vv well made. But plain, that is the only thing.

Personally don't think any of the high street coats (aside from H&M) are actually properly waterproof. Depends whether you mean properly waterproof or can withstand a light shower like most of Next's range. I don't see the point of those, but then I'm in Yorkshire and it rains a LOT. Boden's anorak certainly doesn't look or feel waterproof and they don't advertise it as such. I like them, but so many children have them round here it turns me off. Didrickson's seem to be the business if you can afford them, haven't ever read a bad thing about them.

vesela · 03/09/2012 08:02

I usually get the H&M one and they've done well. The colours this year are horrible, but they have an orange one which isn't yet in stock.

The only Boden ones I would consider for a winter coat are the ski jackets. The girls' hoods have fur trims, though, which is annoying (collects snow/gets wet and freezes) and the boys' ones are "snowboard jackets" and look a bit short. Boden should make a wider range of proper winter jackets rather than all the padded jackets - who wants a "shower-resistant" coat for their DC's main winter coat?

Lands' End have some that seem good.

I bought a Didrikson's for myself last year and it's been fantastic. I'm thinking of buying a Didrikson's Camden for DD (the fur trim is removable) but there don't seem to be many in stock yet.

CouthyMowWearingOrange · 03/09/2012 08:09

The H&M one has done DS1 for two winters, but isn't in good enough nick to pass on to DS2. I am going to Google some of these suggestions. The North Face is one I have been considering for DS1, but I need to see if they have a black one very fussy child.

GinGirl · 03/09/2012 08:14

Am watching with interest and can see that I'm going to have to do some searching online. DD2 and 3 are going into gorgeous M&S coats that DD1 and 2 had two years ago. They are smart, warm and wash like a dream.

But need to find a coat for DD1, suitable for school and weekends as she has grown out of her one from last year.

WhereMyMilk · 03/09/2012 08:22

I can also second the Gap coats. Wash and dry easily and quickly. Very toasty in the winter.

Also wait for the 30% off thing so keeps price down.

Vagaceratops · 03/09/2012 08:30

I will ebay and get one from Debenhams or Gap.

Vagaceratops · 03/09/2012 08:30

Or M&S.

choceyes · 03/09/2012 09:33

I was looking at the Boden coats after reading this thread and considering the navy wool duffle coat for my DS.
Anyone know what the sizing is like? Is the quality any good?

DS has outgrown a lovely Mini-a-ture jacket he wore last year. Gorgoues, toasty warm, waterproof and a lovely big hood as well.

like above but in a gorgoues green. DD will wear it next year.

I second Brandnewbrighttomorrow! Landsend down coats are great. I always buy a colour that both kids can wear (I have one of each) then DC1 wears it for 2 years, followed by DC2 for 2 years, and then I pass them on/ebay them. So I get 4 years out of them and after that they are still in good condition. They are super warm and my kids love them. Well worth the money, and they have some colours in the sale at the moment.

Brandnewbrighttomorrow · 03/09/2012 12:53

Top spot approximately, these are for you Thanks! I looked last night at the full price ones on lands end but didn't think to look in the sale for coats, I assumed it would just be summer gear. New winter coat for dc2 on its way Grin

daisydoodoo · 03/09/2012 15:05

the duffle coats usually come up big, my dd is between sizes at the moment, 5-6 just too small but 7-8 too big, shes 6.5.

They have changed the design of the boys fleece lined anoraks, they used to be basically the same coat but grouped into girls/boys by pattern and colour. We have the reddy colour one with flower print on and the navy striped one (2 dd's) i also ordered the aubergine quilted coat but its not arrived yet.

If you can find a discount code for joules then the fleece lined anoraks are def worth the money they have sealed seams so waterproof and not just showerproof, good hood on them and nice and warm but not too bulky. Im waiting for this years versions to arrive so we can decide between those or the boden ones. DD keeps aksing for the spotty padded joules one as well, she has a bit of a coat and shoe fetsh just like her mum.

Approximately · 03/09/2012 16:41

Why thank you Brandnewbrighttomorrow! Grin

MegBusset · 03/09/2012 16:50

I ordered this for DS1 - he'll be 6 in Feb, I ordered size 6-7 but it is HUGE, although lovely. It is now sold out in 5-6 so I've ordered this in orange, and have put the green one away for a couple of years' time!

anchovies · 03/09/2012 16:51

Vesela - some reduced didrikons camden coats on viking kids, might be worth a look if you've got little ones :)

TheHeirOfSlytherin · 03/09/2012 16:56

I got ds this boden coat when they had their 20% off sale a couple of weeks ago. It's absolutely gorgeous (and the style matches dh's coat so ds is very pleased to be dressed like daddy).

ContinentalKat · 03/09/2012 16:57

Another fan of the h&m ski coats here, wash well and ds wore his for 2 years.

Have also bought mountain warehouse ski coats in the past. Excellent value as well.

I would always choose a ski coat over a "fashion" coat as they are best at keeping out the horrible damp cold!

LittleBarnOwl · 03/09/2012 17:01

I got DD a Gap coat last year and it was good but she's had a big growth spurt over the summer so bought her a Trespass padded and waterproof jacket and it is really nice, half price too, only £22.

DS's puffy coat from Debenhams will do him again this year as bought it big last year, it's a good coat but the fur round the hood looks like it needs shaved or something!

Meggles76 · 03/09/2012 17:12

This year I have bought DC 2 coats each:

DS age 9 - Blue fleece lined jacket from Next. Will be good for autumn and spring. Then a navy parka style winter coat from John Lewis.

DD age 7 - Joules jacket - navy with a horse print and she loves it! Also a navy duffle coat from John Lewis

numbertaker · 03/09/2012 17:17

I just got two Regatta , fleece lined waterproof coats from Range, for £20. Bargin.
