I've just been given this coat, it is not really my normal style but i'm pregnant so my others don't fit and i'm broke so buying another not really an option. I'm very grateful for the coat, just a bit stumped as to what on earth i can put with it.

I normally wear long wool single breasted coats with berets or 20's style hats and leather driving gloves...I feel comfiest when i look reasonably smart and quite classic- don't feel so comfortable in anything trendy or very scruffy.

I have no idea what to put with it so it will look a bit more together (and hopefully a bit more classic) than it looks on its own.

Please help!

This isn't the exact coat, but the nearest photo i could find. It is a very similar colour and shape but mine is made of wool here

Hmmmm.....I would try.....

  • a short pleated or full skirt, that finishes just on the knee with thick tights (maybe grey) and knee high boots or brogue shoes.
  • have you any skinny maternity jeans? Maybe try with the bottoms turned up and Cuban heeled boots...I think they look cool with a small gap between top of boot and bottom of jean leg. Or skinnies with flat Chelsea boots?
  • Smart 7/8 length wool trousers - with a crease down the front - with loafers or brogues or slipper cut flats

....maybe you could change the buttons to military ones?

Oh my goodness, LeChatRouge, you are in another league to me!!

I kind of meant, what hat and scarf would look ok?- styling whole outfits to go with my coat is so so beyond my meagre efforts!

I'm going to have to wear that coat with all my outfits everyday, iyswim!
(although the ideas do sound lovely- i can do the smart wool trousers with flat shoes ones but I think I might cause a panic stampede if I put on a short skirt at the moment)

Any ideas on the scarf/hat front if you can forgive my completely unstylish ways? :-)

I think you could fully button it up (if it fits over bump!) and still wear your normal gloves and beret.....with some red lipstick it would look very nice.

Or maybe a nude coloured knitted snood, would balance the colour well.

You could take it from military to Town and Country with a fair isle knit scarf and maybe a jewelled brooch (charity shop?)

Or really add some luxe....keep your beret and gloves and add a faux fur short scarf....again very chic.

Are you keeping it? You could make it grungy by adding some studs (cheap on fleabay) to the lapels.
