Should I grow it out?

I've got lots of grey hair and have been coloring it dark brown (my natural color) for the last 20 years or so. Getting fed up of constantly coloring my hair and the roots are really noticeable with such dark ends, so I do it about every 4 weeks. I want a lighter color, possibly with highlights, so that regrowth isn't so obvious so I went for a consultation with a hairdresser.

She told me she couldn't strip the color from my hair and that I would have to grow out the dye Shock. Is this really true? Apparently I can use semi permanent colors while I am waiting and a dark blonde color would be fine. I'm ok with this but why won't she strip out the color? She told me that no-one does that when I asked.

Thinking of going elsewhere for another consultation.....

I'd try elsewhere before you give up. Obviously it depends a lot on the condition of your hair, but I stripped and recoloured lighter NDN's hair just with supermarket stuff. So in theory it can be done.

Not that I recommend letting your non hairdresser mate loose on your hair. I had my heart in my mouth the whole time. But she was determined and I knew I'd do a better job of it that she would by herself.
