Can anyone recommend any sturdy brown brogues for my DH...around £200?

Bit over budget, but you can't go too far with Oliver Sweeneys or Paul Smiths... Sweeneys in particular last well, ime:

Oliver Sweeney

Paul Smith

These asos ones are surprisingly decent - ok we are buying the second pair in 2 years but considering they've been worn almost every work day ...

Love those OS ones and the Asos pair are a bargain but I think he would need a more rugged, rubbery, sole........

Loakes are nice. They sell them in Debenhams, but most appear to be a budget version made in India. There is a difference.

I have been very happy with better mens shoes from Jones the Bootmaker. You may have to order them if the precise size and style you want is not in you nearest branch, they are sometimes quite small.

You can get solid leather soles or or thick treaded rubber. Never plastic. You want a stitched welt and to be able to see the stitches in the sole. Handle a few and you will be able to spot the differences. Leather soles are more trouble for people who are liable to get caught in the rain.

Have had Paul Smith's and don't think they're as good.

some examples

they also have a "sale" and a "clearance" section

outside the office, thr brown and chestnut ones can look good.

DP had some tan Loakes around that price mark a few months ago- he has been unbelievably pleased with them and said he is buying another pair (in another colour). He got them from a local independent mens outfitters.

ahh, when I said brown - I actually meant tan..........Blush

Grenson make the best mens shoes and they are an English company to boot!

OneLittleLady · 15/07/2013 16:53

Kurt Geiger for men had some really nice ones, not sure if they still have them , cost roughly £90-£100. DP got some last winter and they still look fabulous now with minimal care

Mummynotmum · 15/07/2013 17:34

Another vote for Grenson. Stunning shoes and beautifully made.
