Hi

I have a coat that the outer is 100% cotton and the lining is 100% polyester.

The label says dry clean only

Should I chance it through the machine on a cool 30 degree synthetic wash?

I wouldn't risk it but I am a bit of a chicken when it comes to washing stuff. I have only recently dared to wash hand-wash stuff in my machine on the hand-wash cycle! I would worry about the outer shrinking a bit and then the lining being all wrinkly.

Depends how structured the coat is.

I do hand wash lots of dry clean stuff but draw the line at coats.

MrsApplepants · 27/08/2012 11:59

Personally, I wouldn't. Fabric probably would be ok but the coat could lose its shape. I send coats, jackets and suits to the cleaners, wash everything else.

If you love the coat then I think you have to dry-clean it.

Tho if it's cotton and polyester, I can't see why it's not washable. Unless the cotton is poor quality, and then it definitely does lose shape, which is a total pain, but that's the way of it.

I washed two coats yesterday - in the washing machine. They were both 'dry clean only', but they were grubby (black coats, make-up stains around the collars), and I can't afford to dry-clean them, nor can I abide the chemical smell from it.

I washed them on the delicate cycle, which is cold, and has a very low spin speed, then put them on the line, and they're fine.

I washed a Zara dry clean only mac yesterday in the machine. Cold cycle and it's perfect. Usually happy enough to wash silk, wool etc on cold wash even if it says dry clean but that was my first attempt at a coat. Truth be told in was only laziness that made me do it as I couldn't be bothered taking it to the dry cleaners. And the fact that our local dry cleaner charges so much that 2 trips and I could have bought the coat again...

I washed it.

Moment of truth coming up soon!
