Capsule Wardrobe for the hopeless

I have just had a search at previous capsule wardrobe threads but all seem to be for richer/ thinner/ more stylish people than me!
I am a short (5'2'') size 14/16 on bottom, size 18 on top (big boobs).
I will soon be 35 and am feeling down about the way I look. I have not really bought any new clothes for a long time, other than the odd item bought as cheaply as possible to replace a totally worn out item.
I will not have a large budget and know I may not be able to get all the bits at once, but what I would love is to know which items to go for in the hope of gradually building up a fab wardrobe over a year or 2.
Previously I have shopped at Dorothy Perkins/ Matalan/ Supermarkets, but I am keen to start building up more stylish, quality items.
I ideally want to have things I can wear at weekends which bits can also be worn to work (is quite casual but no jeans/ trainers).
I am not very trendy and don't want to invest in things that will quickly date. I quite like the Fatface/ Whitestuff type of look.
If anyone is able to help I would really appreciate it as don't want to blow money on crap again!
Thanks
