Manicures: how often?

The state of my nails is grim. I want them OPI-ed, but only get this done professionally as a rare treat. A DIY job never looks the same [cack handed]. Just curious to see how often other people get it done and how much you pay. If I get a proper manicure done, can I then just go for file and polish? And is shellac (the removal of) safe while pg?

I have a Shellac manicure every fortnight. Costs me £24 and my nails look great. Bit more expensive than doing it myself but I dot need to keep worrying about chips etc, and my nails never look scabby anymore.

My nails were growing nice and strong, then I had an OPI manicure and they've been weak and splitting ever since, so never again for me.

Just had to get that off my chest.
