Clothes for hot weather if you have horrid legs

I am going on holiday somewhere hot and don't know what I can wear as I hate my legs so won't wear summery dresses. They are dumpy, thick and pasty! Kind of like a 60 year old bloke's legs. I'm short, size 10 ish not exactly willowy but not massive either. Stocky build. I can carry off wide leg trousers but only if I wear wedges and these aren't practical in the day time when I'd prefer flip flops.

Any ideas as leggings will be too hot surely?

I would put on some of that moisturiser with fake tan in and just get them out. Its another country, you won't see anyone there again (i imagine) and i bet your legs are much nicer then you think they are anyway!

Most holidaymakers dress differently on holiday then they would at home because its bloody hot and its not worth suffering in the heat and spoiling your holiday. After a while the self consciousness will fade, it always does with me anyway.

Btw Im a similar size to you and have chunky legs too.

I find long flowing skirts good with flip flops.

SnapesOnAPlane · 10/08/2012 18:50

If the only reason you won't wear dresses is the awful legs, how about a maxi dress?
No hideous legs to horrify the locals, no leggings to roast yourself in, just floaty summery bliss.
Even if you look like a shapeless mishapen lump, if the only alternative is leggings, that is OK.

dexter73 · 10/08/2012 18:51

Just get them out. Nobody will be looking at your legs. Like what poopoo says!

goldmedalmother · 10/08/2012 20:14

People I know will be there so I will still feel self-conscious and I'm allergic to fake tan [eye roll] so sounds like maxi dress/ skirts are the best option. Any links to nice ones?

Oh i see what you mean. If i were on holiday with my dcs and my husband i wouldn't feel self conscious at all, but with my inlaws . . . !

They can't be that big though if you are a size 10. I bet they are nicer then you think. Smile

Being allergic to fake tan is a pain.

Im no good at finding clothes but Im sure someone will come along who is.

TenaPenny · 10/08/2012 22:18

Get em out fgs

goldmedalmother · 10/08/2012 22:48

I suppose if I get them out a little they'd get a bit of colour anyway.
I HATE them though. They are very chunky believe me - muscly and manly Sad

long cotton ankle length skirts are not too hot - I got a couple to go sightseeing in Egypt (a long time ago!) - did the ethnic look with peasant blouses and sandals. The blouses also made a good cover up for lounging by the hotel pool.

I used to feel like you OP but since giving myself a jolly good talking to a few years ago I now couldn't give a monkey's and get my legs out whenever it is hot.

I have awful cellulite which is slowly improving thanks to daily body brushing, exercise and daily moisturiser (with or without fake tan). I tend towards heavy legs in the heat but seriously, you will not feel any better with them covered up - you will still be self-conscious and aware of how much you dislike them. I just remind myself that they are just legs FFS, they work, and pretty much every woman in the world has cellulite (and would be pasty and grey if they kept them hidden away!). I think when you feel you have heavy legs they also feel much much bigger than average - cumbersome somehow. But you are only a size 10 OP so even if they feel bigger than you would like they will not be as huge as you imagine they are :)

We all have our insecurities - perhaps some of your friends are hugely envious of your size 10 body :).

Relax and enjoy yourself!!

Hello, I have exactly the same problem. My calves and ankles are completely out of proportion with the whole of my body which usually is no problem for me except for every year when I go on holiday.

I have found that fat face tend to do these skirts that are sort of long enough to cover the legs but not maxi. They are pricey and I got them but good for holidays and I bring them out every year. I also got this really lovely 3/4 dress in the warehouse sale this year for £15 which was great. I also like cream linen trousers. I got mine from firetrap so they are not mumsy - iykwim.

At the swimming pool this year I met a girl and we were chatting and I said how embarrassed I was about my legs and she said she hadn't even noticed. My best defence against not liking my legs is wedges and a big smile to detract attention!

You are soooooo lucky to be going on holiday. Have a good time!!

Ruprekt · 10/08/2012 23:10

Are you allergic to spray tan as well then?

If not I would get a spray tan and just go with it! NO ONE will be looking at your legs.

Shorter linen trousers
Long skirts
Or just have a glass of vino and get them on display!!!

goldmedalmother · 10/08/2012 23:13

Thanks for your thoughts. I will try and be braver and get some colour in them if poss. They look passable with high heels/ wedges and tights but it's this problem of them not being elongated in flip flops or flats and they are so pasty. Argh!

Try exfoliating and lovingly smothering them in a lovely daily moisturiser between now and your hols. Also this might sound silly but getting them out as much as possible between now and when you leave will get you used to them being out, iyswim. Sometimes I think we are more self conscious because we aren't used to exposing a particular but of ourselves. I always feel like the woman on the Boots advert a few summers ago: she walks on to a crowded beach and just as she removes her beach dress the entire crowd goes quite and turns to watch! The truth is people are just busy enjoying their own holiday to care :)

I feel for you OP but brazen it out. It will be a life changing experience :)

I have just bought a White Stuff skirt which somehow balances my legs out and they look out BUT it seems a little frumpy. What sort of top can I wear to make it less so?
