And I suffer from very bad ingrown hair too.

QuenelleOJersey2012 · 08/08/2012 17:07

How quickly does it start to reappear? Do you get a sort of 5 o'clock shadow? How long does it get before you have it all off again? Do you have dark or blonde pubes?

IAmSheWhoMustBeObeyed · 08/08/2012 17:08

Why do women do it?
I look at the male athletes with hairy pits and legs and wish to god there was parity. I spent the winter totally un shaven but could not brave exposing my hairy legs when the hot weather finally arrived. That is social pressure I guess but my pubes are seen by a very limited number of people so I have no need or desire to trim them at all.

I have really dark hair and olive skin. Waxing when keeping it up lasts around three weeks for me but initially only really a week or so if I have not gone regularly. Part of the reason I prefer waxing is how badly my skin reacts to shaving, especially the bikini line.

I honestly don't find it that painful, in fact I end up sniggering half the time Blush but don't have it done on the week before your period and if you are really worried, take two paracetamol before hand.

The actual sorest part for me is the very top of the hill so to speak! I think because the skin is just so thin there. But it only hurts for a few seconds.

They will also offer to pluck any stray hair but I refuse as that is far more painful than waxing!

FateLovesTheFearless · 08/08/2012 17:12

Oh and it needs to be roughly a centimetre long for waxing.

persephonejones · 08/08/2012 17:14

FateLoves: I also have dark hair and olive skin. I really want to go for the brazillian but am prone to ingrown hairs. Have you found that to be a problem?

FateLovesTheFearless · 08/08/2012 17:16

No not at all, it's because of ingrown hairs from shaving that I went. When you are waxed the hair is taken right from the root so it grows back softer than a blunt edges shaved pube. If you are worried though just moisturise afterwards and exfoliate for a few days. I may still on occasion get one or two but not like i did from shaving.

persephonejones · 08/08/2012 17:19

but can one exfoliate the area around one's bottom? Blush.

Honestly, thank f**k for mumsnet, I have been wanting to ask someone these questions for so long but it is so embarassing

FateLovesTheFearless · 08/08/2012 17:19

Grin I hold my hands up on that one! My bottom is an exfoliate free zone, but I suspect you could!

persephonejones · 08/08/2012 17:22

I suppose if you can rip hairs out of your bottom you can exfoliate it too Grin. This is the only thingholding me back from a braziliian atm.

AbsofAwesomeness · 08/08/2012 17:27

I agree with Bunny, it is freaking awesome for sex (in terms of sensation). Wow.

AbsofAwesomeness · 08/08/2012 17:29

And the bottom being done bit is actually not that painful. And I've never ever been asked to go on all fours, ever. In years of waxing

threeleftfeet · 08/08/2012 17:29

"guys prefer a clean shaved fanny"

Do they really? All guys?! Are you sure about that? Hmm

Perhaps the ones you know, but not my DP for a start. He actually said, when we got together "don't feel you need to shave your legs for me, I really don't mind if you do or you don't." (He didn't mention fanjo as he knew already that it was unshaved!)

In my younger days I was slim, pretty and fairly promiscuous (as were most people I knew!). I've had possibly more than my fair share of casual partners, and 5 significant relationships. I have only once had a comment about my unshavedness (and I lost respect for the person as a result). Not shaving certainly never harmed my sex life!

If you want to do it because you prefer it and are in denial about how you've been manipulated by the media and your peers to think this is the norm then fine.

But because you think guys prefer it? Give me a break! What kind of backwards Neanderthals are you sleeping with?! Kick them out of bed and find a real man who appreciates you!!

persephonejones · 08/08/2012 17:32

But I am not in denial about how I have been maniplulated by the media...I KNOW I have been.

But I still want to conform to stereotypical idead of beauty and have increased sensation during sex Grin

BunnyLebowski · 08/08/2012 17:35

Yes yes aufaniae we're all brain-dead wannabe porn stars incapable of independent thought Hmm

For those asking about the bum region. I have that done as well. No point having smooth lips and a sprouting ahole is there?! Grin

I lay on each side for that bit and pull the upper leg up to my chest. Meh. In for a penny..... Wink

AbsofAwesomeness · 08/08/2012 17:39

"and are in denial about how you've been manipulated by the media and your peers to think this is the norm" - erm, yeah. I don't watch tv, only DVDs (waxing isn't really discussed much on Seinfeld), and have mostly male friends and I cannot think that I ever have, or ever would, discuss genital waxing or topiary with them.

Seriously, the smug knowall arsiness of some people is quite astounding. Whatever happened letting people be, accepting other woman's choices?

Vicky08 · 08/08/2012 17:42

I normally get a normal bikini wax, just the sides, and a bit of a tidy up IYKWIM but have always wanted to get a Brazilian, I've just been too scared, after reading this I think I'll go for it.

I don't feel in any way manipulated by anyone to do, I want to do it for me, because I like it.

I respect those who don't like it and don't want to do it and I hope that they can also respect those who do do it.

CakeBump · 08/08/2012 17:53

Wow, I never thought of my waxing choices as anything but exactly that - MY choice!!

If I can't be bothered, I don't touch it. Every so often I go all out for a Hollywood. Depends what mood I'm in. DH loves the Hollywood but wouldn't think to complain (as if!) if I was full on natural either.

I much prefer having nothing/next to nothing there, but there aren't any decent waxers near me so I just do it as and when.

And manipulated by the media? I don't think so.....

Ameliagrey · 08/08/2012 17:59

Who are these guys who can be so fussy about whether it's smooth, trimmed or full bush?

Oh- and why does everyone think old ladies don't have any? Am I out of touch?

Vicky08 · 08/08/2012 18:02

If I've learnt something today on MN it's that old ladies have a bald fanjo, I had no idea.

Vicky08 · 08/08/2012 18:03

x post Ameliagrey Grin

FateLovesTheFearless · 08/08/2012 18:29

Honestly I really don't think guys really care all that much over all Grin they may have a preference or either but I doubt any would go...oh hey wait, you have a shaved/jungle fanjo, I am outta here!

Whilst I would take my DPs preference into consideration if he was to ask me to go back to bush, I personally wouldn't want to. I prefer smooth, my own preference with my own body. Smile

Ameliagrey · 08/08/2012 18:35

So when does it all fall out- experts!
50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s....how long have I got?

And how do you know- nurses?

OneLittleToddlingTerror · 08/08/2012 18:52

Tbh I don't think most guys care that much either. I know my DH wouldnt even mind if I don't keep my pits or legs hair free. But I do it for myself. I like hairless pits, legs and arms. Even in deep winter. I just don't mind my fanjo (other than tidying it up for wearing swimwear). So I can completely understand how other women might want a brazillian.

But the original article tackles the misinformation that unshaven = unclean. I think thats still a valid point, especially to teenage girls. It also mention how the bald look is unheard of in the 80s. So maybe it's also an age thing? Like if you are a teenager in the 90s, you are more likely to have brazillians?
