Spotty bumpy upper arms :(

I've come out in some sort of rash that's lasted the last couple of months, any idea what's causing it or how to get rid of it?

My arms are one of my better features do this is particularly annoying! There are lots of spots, too small to see but it feels really rough and horrible. Sometimes they come up redder and then you can see them, too.

I've tried body brushing and exfoliating which has made only a slight improvement. I'm not sure if moisturising makes it better or worse. Sun cream was not great for it but luckily (hmm) I've not needed much this summer.

Any ideas..? Thanks.

Keratosis pilaris?
Flexitol heel balm overnight helps (it's smelly!).

Lizzabadger · 02/08/2012 07:33

Was going to say keratosis pilaris too, although it's likely you would had had this a long time. I don't think there's masses you can do apart from live with it. It's very common.

angryfurball · 02/08/2012 08:28

keratosis pilaris, I have this on my upper arms and mildly on my lower legs. What works for me is daily exfoliating and avoiding overly chemical soaps which dry it out and irritate it. Steam makes it immediately go away and if I steam regularly it stays under control quite well. If you have access to a sauna or sometimes I just switch the shower on as hot as it will go and sit in the steamy bathroom. I use a moisturiser called amlactin which helps immensely.

UntamedShrew · 02/08/2012 08:53

Weirdly I think mine is worse after a very hot shower - heat seems to aggravate it, anyway.

I've got a flexitol heal stick so will try that tonight, thanks!

I can add this condition then to a long list of things I have developed since my pregnancy with DD. good job she is so cute as I'm falling apart at the seams Grin

Flexitol really does improve this - apply daily and you'll see the results!

c4rnsi1lke · 02/08/2012 12:30

Flexitol works but eucerin is better for the arms as it soaks in more easily.

bushymcbush · 02/08/2012 17:46

I use the boots version of Flexitol - it smells much nicer and does exactly the same job.

letseatgrandma · 02/08/2012 19:50

Do you have to put the Flexitol on regularly or will once having an effect?

I actually rather like the smell ;)

RecursiveMoon · 02/08/2012 20:52

I think that once a week or so would have a good effect for me. I CBA half of the time though Grin. I just do it when they look a bit ropey.

dementedma · 02/08/2012 21:51

Buy a Buffy bar from lush and use regularly. Has transformed my lumpy bumpy bits

ILoveOnionRings · 02/08/2012 21:55

I have this too - exfoliate every shower and apply bio oil, not had a bother for a few months now

RillaBlythe · 02/08/2012 21:57

huh, I have this too after DD2. Really bugs me as I used to have nice shoulders & now they are all weirdly bumpy. Will try suggestions.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 02/08/2012 21:59

Blimey Amlactin doesn't come cheap does it! Guessing the chances of a GP prescribing it is limited??

Kbear · 02/08/2012 22:00

My DD suffers with this - Dove Intensive Moisturising cream makes a huge difference - it's the one with white bottle with dark red writing. It's on offer in Boots too. It also really helps when she has a flare up of eczema - last week she was on fire after wearing a wet suit in sea water on a school trip for pretty much a whole week - she didn't take the cream but first night back, slathered it all over and next day, soothed and much improved!

UnrequitedSkink · 02/08/2012 22:03

Wierdly pregnancy sorted mine out - they were smooth for the first time in years! Back to bumpy and red now though. My friend swears by bio-oil too.

SammyB30 · 02/08/2012 22:12

Wonderful beautiful sunshine sorts mine out in no time! Good job we are having such a great summer....Angry Suffered from KP for years and never tried any of your suggestions so will definitely give them a shot!

GaryTankCommander · 02/08/2012 22:16

I had this... What helped for me was the Clarisonic (quite expensive). I used it every morning in the shower and it soon went.

UntamedShrew · 04/08/2012 12:05

Wow I love mumsnet. Not only do I now know the Latin name for my pimply arms Smile I also have some great tips here. I've done 2 days of flexitol in evening, bio oil in morning.. And they look better already.

Still bumpy but not rough and they look and feel tons better.

Thank you all. Flowers

  • hope that worked as I'm on my phone!
