Do fat people have no style?

EddieIzzardIsMine · 01/08/2012 19:19

Thats the only thing I can assume designers must think!

I am fat curvy and want something to wear for an up-coming night out with 3 thin, very pretty friends that wont make me look like the bodyguard they brought with them for protection - can I find anything? Can I buggery!

Would like something nice to wear, have boobs and dont mind cleavage but also have hips/tummy/arse (and bingo wings but can wear a shrug/cardigan thing)

I'm only 25 so dont want to look frumpy

Quite like dresses as long as they're not too short

Someone must be able to help?

ASOS Curve looks pretty good, it's for size 20-26. I get petite stuff from there a lot, they have a massive range and it's actually pretty fashion forward rather than a random selection of stuff from the regular range, seems to be the same with their Curve stuff. Hope you enjoy your night out!

BupcakesandCunting · 01/08/2012 19:52

What size are you Eddie? What is your "style"?

Krumbum · 01/08/2012 19:55

The plus size b&b section in h&m does really nice stuff. Goes up to a 30 I believe. Ive bought some really nice dresses that are a good length from there!

Itsgottabebags · 01/08/2012 20:01

Dotty P's?

Bupcakes I tend to wear lots of black as its 'safest', day wear is long tops/tunics/dresses over jeans or longer dresses with tights, all with cardigan and boots

Going out hasnt really happened post-baby so havent really any clothes for the size I am now

I don't like anything overly pink and girly or 'blingy'

Has that helped?!

MarsLady · 01/08/2012 20:15

No. My sister is a large lady and she always looks fabulous. She dresses using colour and she wears fitted clothes as that looks so much better than loose fitting bits.

I think the secret is to walk like you look a million dollars, you know why? Because I bet you do!

MrsCampbellBlack · 01/08/2012 20:16

Eddie - what size are you and how tall and whats your budget? There's good stuff out there . . .

LurkingAndLearningLovesCats · 01/08/2012 20:17

My overweight friends dress drably because they are ashamed of their bodies. :(

Whenever I go shopping with mum she always asks why designers assume large ladies love floral? Hmm I think I'd murder mum if she ever put one of those floral bags blouses on.

Igotdaboobies · 01/08/2012 20:20

Bloody hell Eddie, I was about to ask if you were me- I am what you describe and currently stressing about going out to some trendy bars with my friends who are all without kids and gorgeous, slim and fashionable. I don't want to stand out like a sore thumb! :(

But then you said you don't like pink or bling so you're not me! But I feel your pain :)

OlympicRelay · 01/08/2012 20:20

Accessories can make a difference.

Do you have ARM issues? I have bingo wings and its so hard to find 3/4 lenght arms.

EddieIzzardIsMine · 01/08/2012 20:22

Ok, things I dont like if it'll help

Tinfoil Top

Kat Slater - there is a lot of this!

Tried these on as I liked the picture, awful fit - made my big thighs even bigger

singingmum · 01/08/2012 20:23

Have you tried simply be they have ranges for all ages. Also bon prix do a fe items in larger sizes.
Simply be are the best I've found as they cover a lot of styles and I can always find what I need and it fits.

JodieHarsh · 01/08/2012 20:24

Vintage darling. Vintage.

ASOS Marketplace
Catwalk Creative Vintage
Etsy

These are you friends

vintage frocks, fab hair, vintage jewellery, mazing shoes.

I wear vintage mostly, and it's because hurrah! would you believe they used to make dresses with sleeves/full skirts/hemlines below the minge etc. etc. Grin

EddieIzzardIsMine · 01/08/2012 20:25

I know Lurking! You're fat so here is a table cloth/grannys curtains to drape youself!

Olympic Yes bingo wings galore! But have a few shrug/cardigan things now to cover up, have learnt the hard way by the post-party pictures!

MrsCampbell Approx a 22, budget is as low as possible!

JodieHarsh · 01/08/2012 20:28

Aussi, right, I have a pal who is probably about a 22 up top (blessed with slender legs). she is EYE WATERLINGLY stylish. we are talking pure silk sacque dresses and vertiginous Vivienne Westwood shoes, and a crap hair done by some underground barber in Hoxton so cool he doesn't even have a name.

I mean: that she consents to be seen in my company is frankly nothing short of miraculous.

Style is something you're born with.

It helps that she has a fairly large disposable income, mind...

JodieHarsh · 01/08/2012 20:28

Har har har! CROP haircut not CRAP HAIR!

MrsCampbellBlack · 01/08/2012 20:29

There's some reasonable stuff in New Look in the Inspire range

EddieIzzardIsMine · 01/08/2012 20:30

JodieHarsh I thougt that was a little mean until I read the correction! Checking out your suggestions now, anything you can point me in the direction of?

OP posts:
JodieHarsh · 01/08/2012 20:31

So you're a size 22ish - what shape? What style do you like?

I can try! the only thing about vintage stuff is it's very hit-and-miss and you do need to look at what looks like a very unpromising outfit and know what you can do with it....

Do you want dresses? tops and skirts? Jeans and tops?

JodieHarsh · 01/08/2012 20:34

(My bath has just run so I need to run too - but definitely have a look at ASOS curve and at ASOS Marketplace (the vintage section).

also have a look at some curvy style blogs. just google something like 'fat fashion blog' (sounds rude: isn't!) and you'll get loads of inspiration.

BupcakesandCunting · 01/08/2012 20:35

OK stop wearing black! You aren't disguising your weight (I used to do this!) you are just making yourself look dowdy. You have what you have so you may as well dress it to look good :)

You like to wear the same things as I do by the sound of it. I have been doing some research for you and here are some links to some pretty (but still fairly safe!) things...

Heart print wrap dress comes in black or white

Clements Ribeiro for Evans printed frock

Wallis bird print dress I actually have this and it is uber flattering

This is bright but black tights would tone it down if you wanted. Nice for an occasion

EddieIzzardIsMine · 01/08/2012 20:37

Ok, have boobs (F cup) and narrow in at the waist (but have a big tummy) and wider hips so hourglass-ish with a tummy? Fat thighs but reasonable calves so dont mind knee-length dresses

Dress or skirt and top would be nice and are more forgiving I think, trousers need to be a very specific fit to look half decent

I'm 5'8" ish so not short

I'm willing to try/look at anything anyone can suggest! Its clear I've no clue!

OP posts:
EddieIzzardIsMine · 01/08/2012 20:40

Thanks Bupcakes looking at those now

I know, I should stop with the all-black (even DP affectionately calls me a goth) but with a little one shopping time is non-existant and I just go for whatever looks least offensive

Think it might need to be a mid-years resolution!

OP posts:
BupcakesandCunting · 01/08/2012 20:43

I think that dresses are the saviour of women size 16 and over. They make you look more streamlined. I know it's a big step moving away from the all black uniform but once you've done it and got loads of compliments, you will not look back, I promise.
